Long-Distance Flute Forum from Miami to Chicago and Boston

Long-Distance Flute Forum from Miami to Chicago and Boston

Nov 15, 2018 Miami, FL

On October 23rd, Michael Tilson Thomas, artistic director of the New World Symphony in Miami, FL, hosted a multi-city flute master class with instructors and students from the Berklee College of Music in Boston and the Northwestern Bienen School of Music in Chicago. Through the utilization of an advanced, super high-speed, low latency audio and video connection, known as LoLa, Thomas was able to observe participating students in both Chicago and Boston perform live flute arrangements while offering instantaneous feedback to them with no discernable lag in the audio or video connections.

Additionally, the use of the cutting edge LoLa technology, provided by the Internet2 network backbone, allowed Thomas the ability to not just lecture to the far-flung groups of flutists, but collaborate dynamically with them on the piano in real-time. With a latency of 30-35 milliseconds round trip for both locations, the experience demonstrated the enormous opportunities for real-time location-based collaboration that LoLa offers to K-12 schools, libraries, music conservatories, performing arts centers, and other community anchor institutions.
