TIER Campus Success: Follow the Adventure
The difficulties of deploying something as mission critical and complex as an identity management platform are considerable for any organization. For higher education institutions the challenge of creating and managing identities for a large student population is even greater. Having a group of collaborators all rowing in the same direction can be a big help.
That’s the goal of the TIER Campus Success Program. Roughly a month into their work, the 10 participating campuses have more clearly defined their goals for adopting the TIER software components and practices. Working with subject matter experts the participants have been sharpening their identity management skills in a number of ways:
- An introduction to midPoint—an open source Identity provisioning, management, and governance platform
- A discussion of Integrating TIER components with the Banner ERP system
- A peek under the covers of the Docker containerized version of the Shibboleth identity provider software
Over the next several months these schools will continue meet regularly to collaborate on their projects. They will work in a very public way, sharing regular blog posts, presentations, reports, and other materials as they go along on the Campus Success Program wiki.
Internet2’s TIER program (Trust and Identity in Education and Research) was created to provide a set of flexible, modular, identity management tools (including Shibboleth, Grouper, COmanage, and midPoint). TIER can replace individual portions of an organization’s existing identity management system or provide a complete solution from the ground up.
In the coming months you can expect to see updates from the project participants as they develop tools to make identity management easier for the entire community.
