When it became apparent that we had to cancel the 2020 Internet2 Technology Exchange in Atlanta, we quickly realized that we could not replicate the value of that unique, live experience with a single virtual event. Instead, our plan is to offer a wider selection of opportunities for the technical community to convene virtually through small bites of the TechEX experience that we call TechEXtras.
We’re launching this concept with a TechExtra Kickoff, scheduled for October 6 and 7, 2020. Plan to join your colleagues from the national and global research and education technical communities for two half-days of virtual programming:
The first keynote address will feature Andrea Norris, Director, Center for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer at the National Institutes of Health, and Michael Tartakovsky, Chief Information Officer and Director, Office of the Cyber Infrastructure and Computational Biology, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Their keynote will focus on research challenges in the era of the pandemic and will be followed by a panel discussion between some of the primary stakeholders facing these challenges.
The second keynote address will feature a talk and Q&A with leadership from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and its N-Wave network. From the Campus to the Cloud: Delivering High-Speed, Scalable Network Capabilities to Enable NOAA Science will focus on N-Wave's evolution and expansion to serve all NOAA missions—from the surface of the sun to the depths of the ocean floor.
Tuesday's programming also includes a brief welcome by Internet2 President and CEO Howard Pfeffer, and some exciting updates on the Internet2 Next Generation Infrastructure (NGI) project.
Wednesday’s program will dive deeper into a variety of advanced networking topics.

- WHY WE COLLECT THIS INFORMATION
We collect your information for organizational purposes relating to the event you will be attending. We also may use your contact information to communicate with you about Internet2 news and events. As a long-standing organizational practice, we may post an event attendee list, including attendee names and institutions, on the event website (Internet2 members or others with InCommon credentials may log in to access attendee email addresses). We post this information online as a service for conference participants, offering a convenient way for the community to collaborate. Internet2 does not sell the contact information of event attendees. Visitors to our website are not permitted to sell, harvest, or generate mailing lists from the event attendee list, nor should they use it for promotional purposes.
Also, as a benefit of sponsoring our events, sponsors receive an event attendee list including attendee names, titles, institutions, postal addresses, phone and fax numbers, as applicable. We closely coordinate with sponsors so that attendees receive information of value about the sponsor, and not just sales materials.
Occasionally, third parties from the research and education community request event attendee lists for purposes of developing surveys, identifying community needs, or collecting data that will be used in research projects that will benefit the community. Upon request, we will share with these third parties an event attendee list including attendee names, titles, institutions, postal addresses, phone and fax numbers, as applicable. We will never store or share with third parties the credit card information we collect from you. What are TechEXtras?
In many ways, Internet2's Technology Exchange has been a fusion of individual community meetings and one of the biggest value-add items was the serendipitous hallway conversations between folks who might not otherwise cross paths. When it became apparent that we had to cancel the 2020 Internet2 Technology Exchange in Atlanta, we knew we had to consider other ways to convene around technical topics.
Over the summer we surveyed the broad community, including all those who have attended previous events. Between those results and a subsequent set of focused community discussions, feedback indicated a strong desire to convene, to discuss, to brainstorm, and to share – over a range of topics – using the networking, high-speed videoconferencing, and other collaboration tools made more common during the pandemic.
We quickly realized that we could not replicate the value of TechEx and its unique, live experience with a single virtual event. Instead, our plan is to offer a wide selection of opportunities for the technical community to convene virtually through small bites of the TechEX experience that we call TechEXtras. TechEXtras will be scheduled throughout the rest of 2020 and into 2021, as needed.
What is the current schedule?
Plans are underway to bring together the community on October 6 & 7 for the TechEXtra: Kickoff. This will be two consecutive half-days, with a mix of cross-audience and deep-dive sessions. There are a number of additional TechEXtras under development and scheduled to take place throughout the rest of 2020 and into 2021, including InCommon CAMP and Advance CAMP, November 16-20, 2020. You can keep an eye out HERE for additional events and we’ll continue to share updates with the community via the Speed Read newsletter and through our web pages. Sign up HERE to get the updates delivered to your inbox.
Is there a registration fee for TechEXtras?
Our inaugural event, the TechEXtra Kickoff will be complimentary for Internet2 members, InCommon participants and International MoU partners. Registration fees for future TechEXtras will be individually determined based on the content and format of the specific event.
Is anything the same about them?
Yes, every TechEXtra will:
- Have a registration to authenticate participants and provide a way for organizers to communicate event details to the right audience.
- Be recorded and available on-demand (when permissible).
- Have ways to schedule follow-up discussions on topics that spill over their prescribed time.
- Use virtual event-friendly formatting that includes short bursts of content followed by open discussions in small groups, with frequent stretch-breaks to maximize sharing ideas and capturing a sense of being together.
How can I participate?
Is there a timely topic you need to be addressed? Or a discussion you’d like to propose? We are working to issue a ‘rolling Call for Participation’ that collects both presentation submissions and a range of topics or community-led discussions, tutorials, and other ways to connect the community. In any case, please reach out to us – we will work to meet these needs throughout the remainder of this year and into 2021, as needed.
There are a number of additional TechEXtras under development and scheduled to take place throughout the rest of 2020 and into 2021. Please check back here for upcoming events.
