NET+ Announces New Amazon Web Services Opportunity as Part of Infrastructure and Platform Services Program
Last fall, the Internet2 community began work on a new model for NET+ Infrastructure and Platform Services. This work has resulted in a new, unified program providing customized offerings for three highly requested services: Microsoft Azure, Office 365 and Amazon Web Services (AWS) via DLT.
Thanks to the collaborative work of Internet2 members, community scale is evident throughout these NET+ services. In fact, immediate opportunities exist for substantial individual institution and total community benefit with Amazon Web Services—especially by April 30, 2015. The program webpage houses full details of the immediate opportunity and NET+ Participation Agreements for the three existing NET+ Infrastructure and Platform services—Azure, Office 365 and Amazon Web Services—all with standard business and legal terms for higher education.
Based on extensive community feedback, and with the goal of lowering cost with greater participation, the new approach for these services has a single annual access fee per institution, with discounted pricing flowing directly to the users of the service. More details about the community-governed process to determine the new annual access fees are also available at this blog post.
In recognition of the many months of work by the service validation institutions, and the many universities that have waited for this program to implement an institutional solution for AWS, a special launch program is available for Internet2 member campuses. By acting promptly to make this opportunity available to your campus community, the benefit to each participating member increases with more participation. Unique and immediate opportunities for access fee discounts are available:
- First, for any Internet2 member institution that has participated in a Service Validation during the last 36 months, a one-year access fee waiver will be granted with enrollment by April 30, 2015.
- Second, the program is structured to provide additional discounts for the entire community based on growth of the program. The lower pricing is automatically applied based on thresholds for total number of campuses participating (e.g. reductions in Access Fees for Year 2 and beyond after 100, 200, 300 campuses participating in each service).
As always, the Internet2 NET+ initiative remains focused on helping the R&E community accelerate user mobility in the cloud under the best possible terms and conditions customized for higher education. These programs are great examples of how the community's work with cloud service providers is making a difference with even more community success at scale within reach for these key infrastructure and platform services.
