90 Percent of Internet2’s 260 Higher Ed Members Use An Internet2 NET+ Learning Management System
Two years after launching the Internet2 NET+ cloud services portfolio, the recent addition of Blackboard illustrates the breadth and impact of the member institutions working together in establishing this groundbreaking approach deploying cloud and application services at scale.
Learning Management Systems (LMS) have long been a fundamental part of academic institutions’ application portfolio, and a core element of their IT environments. Now with cloud service delivery models, these campuses have the ability to adopt the newest tools faster, easier and more cost effectively than ever before.
Today, the Internet2 NET+ portfolio supports the three LMS’s already in use by 90 percent of Internet2’s 260 higher education members. These three cloud offerings-Blackboard, Instructure's Canvas and Desire2Learn-can now be accessed over the Internet2 network via the NET+ initiative. This makes LMS one of the most complete service offerings available to the Internet2 community!
The breadth of use of these LMS services within the NET+ portfolio also has far-reaching impact to streamline integration with other cloud services. This is further enhanced by the agreement for all NET+ providers to adopt and support InCommon, the higher education identity federation. This not only extends the overall reach of the initiative, but also positions the Internet2 member community to encourage courseware providers and other cloud service providers to participate in NET+, especially those with tools to advance the trust and identity evolution. It also helps all non-Internet2 schools, including several hundred that have joined InCommon.org, that can take advantage of these benefits.
Leveraging the Internet2 advanced network and enabling services like InCommon, the Internet2 NET+ Services team continues to develop a portfolio of cloud service offerings that bring real value to Internet2 members. Our goal remains the creation of services that are cost-effective, easy to access and simple to administer.
Member institutions currently using an LMS that are interested in participating in the NET+ offering or want to attend our webinar with Blackboard on August 20 at 1 p.m. Eastern are encouraged to contact us at email@example.com.
