In a delightful late afternoon Zoom gathering in Europe, the 2020 GÉANT Community Award ceremony commenced. These awards are usually presented during the annual TNC conference, of course, sadly cancelled this year.

This did not prevent a large virtual gathering of colleagues, all dressed for the occasion and ready to toast this year’s well deserving awardees. The emphasis from all award presenters and honorees was that during difficult times we come to appreciate the community more than ever, and it made this ceremony genuinely moving as well as festive.

This year’s GÉANT Community Award was shared by three awardees who are notably an integral part of the global research and education (R&E) community:

Ann Harding from SWITCH in Switzerland was honored for her work on eduroam and eduGAIN. Internet2 knows her well for her strong collaborative work with our trust and identity community. Internet2 has also benefited, for the past two years, from her participation in and contributions to the Internet2 Global Summit event as part of the program committee.

Leif Johansson from SUNET in Sweden was recognized for his advanced contributions in the trust and identity space. Beyond his keen technical understanding, he brings an important focus on legal and political implications necessary to the successful deployment of R&E services.

Niels Van Dijk from SURFnet in The Netherlands was recognized for his innovative ideas and contributions to REFEDS and the GÉANT project, again, highlighting the importance of global collaboration in supporting the mutual needs of R&E identity federations worldwide.

Last but not least, the Vietsch Foundation Medal of Honour was awarded to Erik Kikkenborg from NORDUnet and Bartlomiej Idzikowski from Poznan University of Technology for their focus on advanced video conferencing services, enabling colleagues to gather and learn about technical advances in a virtual world – a timely contribution.

Internet2 extends its enthusiastic congratulations to all awardees!
