TechEX 2019 Sneak Peek: Supporting Esports Infrastructure in PA – KINBER’s Esports Direct Connect (KESDX) Service

Competitive esports is rapidly gaining popularity at colleges and universities across the country and with that comes increased infrastructure requirements to support evolving gaming needs. Global esports revenue will hit $1.1 billion in 2019, up 27% in just one year, and academic entities are racing to launch, develop, and support esports programs and facilities to increase enrollment and poise their institution to be ready for the explosion of esports.
Using advanced infrastructure available nationally and regionally, research and education network organizations such as KINBER are bringing esports network services, solutions, training, and support to their member communities to meet increasing needs and interest.
In anticipation of this demand on infrastructure, KINBER launched its esports pilot program in April 2019 in partnership with Internet2, using its Rapid Private Interconnect (RPI) service to provide connectivity in Asburn, VA, to major game networks including Twitch, Riot, Blizzard, and Valve at the Equinix peering exchange facility.
KINBER is also leveraging advanced networking technologies and solutions, including the science DMZ concept, to adapt for enterprise needs in support of the explosive growth and network demands of competitive esports.
An esports focused community of practice was launched by KINBER in September 2019, dedicated to supporting interest and providing a forum for exchange of innovative best practices, ideas and information exchange in the rapidly advancing esports landscape.
Research and education networks around the global are well poised to meet esports demand and requirements, through partnerships and innovative service delivery such as KINBER’s esports direct connect KESDX service in Pennsylvania.
