Supporting collaborative research has been a key driver for Internet2 since its founding in 1996. It remains a critical priority toward shaping our national technology infrastructure and providing the essential components of an integrated ecosystem that includes advanced networking, federated trust and identity, and cloud access.

Over the past year, Internet2 has been involved in key community partnerships in support of research including participation in the National Research Platform testbed, the Open Science Grid data federation pilot, and the recently announced E-CAS (Exploring Clouds for Acceleration of Science) cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation, among other things.

In early December, Internet2 actively started searching for a leader of our research engagement efforts with broad experience in supporting the research mission of our member campuses and a deep understanding of research computing, among other important qualifications. I am so pleased to tell you that we have been able to find an extraordinary individual that will be joining Internet2 as the new executive director for our research engagement program.

Dr. Dana Brunson is joining Internet2 starting January 28, 2019, following a successful tenure at Oklahoma State University (OSU). She recently served in three capacities at OSU: as assistant vice president for research cyberinfrastructure; director of the Oklahoma State University High Performance Computing Center; and adjunct associate professor in the departments of mathematics and computer science.

In her role as the executive director for research engagement, Dr. Brunson will be responsible for developing, directing and executing Internet2’s strategy and active engagement with the national and global communities that supports the effective use and development of research cyberinfrastructure (CI).

Dr. Brunson has been actively involved with Internet2’s efforts around research engagement as a vested community leader and brings a wealth of experience supporting the research mission of higher education with a deep understanding of research computing. Some of her notable achievements include co-leading the OneOklahoma Cyberinfrastructure Initiative and co-managing the XSEDE Campus Engagement program through support from the National Science Foundation.

Dr. Brunson is also a leader and member of the Campus Research Computing Consortium (CaRCC) Council and serves on multiple national advisory committees. She has participated as principal investigator and co-principal investigator on multiple significant awards, many of which have greatly increased research computing and CI capabilities for OSU, the state of Oklahoma, and the Great Plains Network.

Dr. Brunson earned a doctorate in mathematics from the University of Texas at Austin and master's and bachelor's degrees in mathematics from OSU.

Under Dr. Brunson’s leadership, Internet2 looks forward to continuing a focused approach in our research engagement and community engagement efforts, as well as how our efforts and services can be leveraged across both the national and global research and education communities to further advance collaboration, science and scholarship.
