Internet2 Releases Optical Request for Proposals
Internet2 has released a Request for Proposal (RFP) for optical network equipment and services. Internet2 intends to implement an open line system, refresh its transponder infrastructure with power-efficient technologies, and fully update the associated software stack.
The project is focused on modernizing, optimizing, and "right sizing" the system architecture – providing the community more value while reducing operations and maintenance cost. Support for features like flexgrid will be a key metric in the evaluation and we are expecting proposals to address fee-free alien wave support, interoperation with other community optical systems, open management interfaces and telemetry.
This milestone in the Next Generation Infrastructure process would not be possible without the continued input from community contributors who helped refine the RFP and will participate in the evaluation.
Responses to the RFP are expected in early 2019 and we will update the community as the process progresses.
