Additional Information Regarding Services and Donations for James Werle

The Werle family greatly appreciates the outpouring of support from the Internet2 staff and community regarding the loss of James. We have received numerous inquiries and thoughtful notes regarding James. At this time, we are able to provide some additional information regarding services and donations.

James’ funeral will be held on October 4 and his celebration of life will be held on October 5. The relevant information for both events is below. With respect to donations to honor James, the family has provided two possible options. James was very supportive of the National Park Service as a frequent visitor and, professionally, through his work leading the Presidential Primary Sources Project. As a result, donations may be made in James’ memory to Washington state’s National Park Fund. This is the official fundraising organization for the three national parks in Washington (North Cascades, Rainier, and Olympic). Olympic National Park is where James wanted his ashes to be spread. The fund has a simple donation page with a field where donations may be made in honor of a particular person. The donations are used to help fund many types of projects, including scientific research, trail building, and family ranger programs, all of which James would definitely approve.

Washington National Park Fund:

An additional option is to make a memorial contribution to an existing 529 education plan for James’ daughters, Violet (age 12) and Lily (age 10). Contributions would be split evenly between Violet and Lily. This fund is owned and administered by James’ mother and stepfather, Dorothy and Phil Tenkhoff.
