Duo Announcement

Apr 02, 2018, by Nick Lewis
Tags: Duo Security, Internet2 NET+
  • A new Duo agreement with enhanced community-developed terms and features takes effect in 2018 and will replace the InCommon Duo Addendum.
  • This transition will require action on the part of the Duo campus subscribers. Details are below, including helpful resources and contact information you’ll need during the transition period.
  • This blog post is a follow-up to the email communications sent to each of the campuses currently subscribed to Duo via the InCommon Duo Addendum.

The Duo Program has proved important for the research and education community and has experienced increased growth over the past 5 years. Based on the increased interest, coupled with feedback from the community, Internet2 and eight campuses participated in a significant effort to create a new Duo offering with community-developed terms. This service validation process resulted in a new agreement with Internet2, under which Duo will be offered to the community as part of the Internet2 Cloud Services program.

A special thank you goes out to Duo and the eight campuses for their significant effort on behalf of our community in working through the service validation process and the updated agreement. Those campuses are: Brown University, Indiana University, New York University, Northwestern University, Old Dominion University, Pennsylvania State University, University of Maryland Baltimore County, and University of Washington.

Under the updated Duo Program, all subscribers will benefit from these new terms and features:

  • Ability to lock-in pricing for future terms
  • Ability to subscribe for multi-year terms
  • Improved terms for Section 508/ADA and FERPA compliance
  • Clarified ownership of customer data and metadata
  • Allowances for state law required terms

As some may recall, the old Duo program was based on an agreement between Internet2 and Duo that provided Internet2 a limited right to sell the Duo service to the community, via a Duo Addendum to the InCommon Participation Agreement.

This program is changing under Internet2’s new agreement with Duo, because Internet2 will no longer be able to renew Duo Addendums. Rather, Duo campus subscribers will enter into the new community-negotiated agreement (described above) directly with Duo. We have been working closely with Duo to develop a transition process that is flexible and efficient.

This transition will require action on your part, as you will be signing the Duo Agreement directly with Duo.

If your Duo Addendum is up for renewal:

Before July 1st, 2018

  • Depending on the specific timing of your renewals, you can start the transition to the new Duo Agreement. Duo will contact you directly prior to your Duo Addendum anniversary date to initiate this transition; however, we suggest that you request a copy of the Duo Agreement as soon as possible to give your Legal Department time to review it.
  • If your agreement renews prior to July 1st, 2018, your transition will happen on your next renewal, unless you contact Duo and request to transition early.

After July 1st, 2018

  • You will be required to transition to the new Duo Agreement if you want to continue to receive Duo Services through Internet2. Internet2 and Duo will contact you directly prior to your Duo Addendum anniversary date to initiate this transition; however, we suggest that you request a copy of the Duo Agreement as soon as possible to give your Legal Department time to review it. Request a copy from Duo at the email address below.
  • In the meantime, for campuses that would like to upgrade or expand their service prior to their Duo Addendum renewal date, we will be able to accommodate and process that request. After your campus transitions to the Duo Agreement, upgrades or expansions will be handled under the updated program and pricing

Rest assured, the transition will not interrupt the technical operations of the service. Campus subscribers will not need to change:

  • any existing integrations
  • deployment of the Duo app
  • local helpdesk support

As noted by the advisory board, you may have Duo set up in your local procurement system as a vendor if you previously purchased tokens or telephony credits, which may help with this transition.

We have received early feedback from several campuses that their own transition has already gone smoothly. Internet2 staff, along with the staff at Duo, will work with you to ensure a smooth transition and to prevent any interruption of service.

Here is a list of helpful resources and contact information you’ll need during the transition period:

  • Additional details on the Duo Program will be posted on the Internet2 website here.
  • Additional technical and support materials from Duo can be found on their website here.
  • If you would like more information about future budgeting, please contact Duo Sales to discuss options for multi-year terms.
