Report from Togo: WACREN2018 Conference
Lomé, Togo, was the site of the 4th annual West and Central African Research and Education Network conference (WACREN2018), and the official launch of the WACREN network. Internet2 was honored to accompany our colleagues from WACREN at such an exciting time!
The conference took place from March 15-16, 2018, in Lomé, Togo, and was hosted by TogoRER, the Togo Research and Education Network, the second time the Togolese network has welcomed the WACREN community to its country. Over 170 participants from all over the world attended the two-day event, composed of presentations and panel discussions centered around the theme of “Unleashing Potentials”. The high point of the conference was the official WACREN network launch, undertaken by none other than the Prime Minister of Togo, Komi Sélom Klassou, in the company of the Minister of Higher Education and Research of Togo Prof. Octave Nicoué Broohm, the CEO of WACREN Dr. Boubakar Barry, and the WACREN Chairman of the Board, Prof. Nii Narku Quaynor. The importance of this inaugural ceremony was amplified by the beautiful voices of the University of Lomé choir.
WACREN2018 was a wonderful venue to meet and interact with international colleagues and learn about new endeavors in the R&E world. Internet2 members were also well-represented at the event, with colleagues from Indiana University, Florida International University, and the Network Startup Resource Center participating in the event and sharing information on their international projects. Urszula Chomicka from Internet2 presented an update on Internet2 activities, while participating in an all-female panel chaired by Cathrin Stover, Chief Collaboration Officer at GEANT.
It was a wonderful few days and we look forward to continuing these conversations at the WACREN2019 event in Accra, Ghana!
