Internet2 Implements Cloud Connect Service with Microsoft Azure
In late 2017, Internet2 announced plans for a Cloud Connect Initiative and provided some information about the various phases of the Cloud Connect Initiative.
The first phase of this Initiative is to implement Cloud Connect Service, allowing the Internet2 community to use the regional and national networks to reach Microsoft Azure Express Route, Amazon Web Services (AWS) Direct Connect, and Google Cloud Platform Direct Interconnect.
Work on implementing each of these services is continuing, with initial focus on implementation of Microsoft Azure Express Route. In December of 2017, Internet2 engineers completed the various steps necessary to provide the service to the community.
Internet2 is able to offer either a Layer 2 or a Layer 3 solution, as desired by the organization seeking to use the network to reach the service. Internet2 is beginning to pilot the service with several regional/campus collaborations. We are working with these willing community members to understand which solution works best in different situations.
This transport service is available at no additional fee for Internet2 Network Connectors. A user of the Azure Express Route service will need to contract for the service directly from Microsoft.
If you are using Microsoft Azure Express Route or are interested in doing so and would like to participation in a pilot of the service, please send a note to email@example.com.
