Facebook has been a leader in an industry effort to reimagine traditional approaches to building and deploying networking infrastructure. Ibrahima Ba, Head of EMEA Infra Connectivity Programs for Facebook, spoke at the Global Summit about the Telecom Infra Project (https://telecominfraproject.com/) and specifically about an optical packet transport platform called Voyager, which is based on commodity "white box" 100G DWDM hardware and supports a variety of open open source switching and routing software stacks. Ibrahima related that technology development effort to another Facebook initiative called "Connecting the Unconnected" (https://www.facebook.com/ConnectingTheUnconnected/), with a goal of providing infrastructure to areas of the world who are still not benefitting from the global Internet.
