Custom Network Solution Ensures High Quality Video Transmission from Venue to Studio

Internet2 has recently been engaged by Pac-12 Networks to support their video contribution network. This network's main purpose is to provide the sole mechanism to transmit live feeds of collegiate sporting events from various venues on the member institution's campuses to the Pac-12 Studios in San Francisco. Pac-12 Networks employs cutting-edge technology to transmit live feeds between locations, enhance those feeds with high-level graphics to enhance the Pac-12's storytelling ability and then delivers the final feed to its affiliates for distribution to home viewers.

To support the unique needs of this broadcast network, Internet2 has deployed a custom network solution utilizing dedicated bandwidth to ensure the highest quality video transmission from venue to studio.

While still early in its deployment, this network has already yielded significant gains for Pac-12 Networks. "Yesterday's live broadcast over our new Internet2 transport network was a great success; for the first time in five seasons of being on air we were able to push the bitrate of our five game cameras to 115 Mbps each. The key areas of improvement were video quality, transmission stability, and audio quality. To top it off, there were no data loss or rtp errors throughout the entire broadcast. This is very exciting to finally go live with the new network and it could not have been possible without partners involved with making this a reality," said Howard Chung, Network Engineering Manager, Pac-12 Networks.

"The Internet2 transport network delivered everything that we had planned for and expected in terms of QOS at an efficient price point," said Michael Harabin, VP of Technology & Engineering. "This level of performance has give us the confidence to develop new tools and enhancements to our broadcasts to make the viewing experience more rewarding and compelling. We will soon be deploying advanced and super-fast highlights (file) sharing between the venues and studio, with other advances to increase our production quality in the pipleline."

Internet2 would like to congratulate Pac-12 Networks on their early achievements and wish them the greatest of success in its future endeavors.
