A Key Tool for Protecting Against Cyber Theft: NET+ Keeper Password Management and Digital Vault
Higher education is often singled out as having a large number of reported data breaches and research from EDUCAUSE shows that while the number of data breaches in higher education seems high, the number of records exposed in those breaches is actually low. According to Symantec's 2015 Internet Security Threat Report, education was third among 10 of the most-breached sectors, accounting for 10 percent of the total number of reported incidents.
More than 63% of data breaches are caused by weak passwords. Cyber thieves attack higher education because of the vast amount of intellectual property, financial data and medical records they store. As cyber threats and compromised accounts continue to increase, password management plays an even more critical role in an organization’s security stance.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham recently implemented a solution it believed to be a good fit for other higher education institutions to help protect their people. UAB sponsored Keeper Security into the Internet2 NET+ program, offering a software platform that provides both enterprise-strength password management and secure digital file storage.
Keeper stores and automatically fills in high-strength passwords for users on every website, app and device. The solution can be quickly provisioned by leveraging its seamless Active Directory and LDAP integration and frictionless onboarding capabilities. Keeper is a zero-knowledge platform that incorporates the industry's strongest security protocols including AES 256-bit encryption, PBKDF2 key derivation and including two-factor authentication while also having prominent industry certifications including SOC 2, and TRUSTe. Keeper's capabilities can enable better integration, alignment and delivery of leading-edge security solutions to fit the various needs of faculty, staff and students. In addition to UAB, Keeper Security protects more than 10 million consumers and 3,000 businesses and universities.
As a NET+ QuickStart service provider, Keeper has become a member of Internet2 and joined the NET+ Program, agreeing to standard NET+ contract terms and conditions to assist universities and colleges in addressing their security and identity management challenges. NET+ Keeper now offers institutions a key tool as part of a robust and comprehensive cybersecurity posture within their organization regardless of size. And, for users, one master password is all it takes to access any application or website.
