Internet2 at TICAL2016 in Buenos Aires
From Sept. 13 to Sept. 15th, the city of Buenos Aires hosted TICAL2016, the 6th annual conference of RedCLARA, which gathers the National Research and Education Networks of Latin America. TICAL is an event that regularly gathers the Directors of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) from Latin American universities, as well as staff from research and education networks, scientists, and representatives from ICT companies and organizations. This year's event was hosted by the Argentinean network Innovared.
This year event had about 300 attendees. The keynote address of the event, on How Big Data and Predictive Analytics is Changing Higher Education, was given by Marc Hoit, Vice Chancellor for Information Technology at NC State University - also an Internet2 member (Marc's pre-event interview is available to read.) Also present were Shel Waggener, Senior Vice President responsible for Net+, myself, and community member Julio Ibarra from Florida International University, who presented on "Deploying SDN experiments in Latin America: the ONOS and SDN-IP application use case at AmLight" during the conference, as well as at the NREN Directors' meeting immediately following the event.
TICAL2016 was an excellent occasion to learn more about exciting developments in the field of ICT in education across Latin America, and to connect with our friends and partners from the higher education ICT community and find out about their current projects and dreams for the future. The event closed with a gala dinner at Madera Tango, where we were treated to a slideshow of photos from previous TICAL events as well as a beautiful tango performance. It was Buenos Aires, after all!
Photos and news from the event are available on TICAL2016's comprehensive event website.
