April CINO Update

Apr 13, 2016, by Emily Nichols
Tags: CINO

Internet2's Chief Innovation Office (CINO) just launched a Smart Campus Initiative: a forum for community members to share learnings and develop new insights and practical recommendations as IoT is increasingly deployed in campus environments. The Smart Campus Initiative is guided by a Smart Campus CIO Advisory Council and creating focused task forces to support Smart Campus collaborative development. The first task force – IoT Systems Risk Management – plans to develop thoughtful and tangible approaches to IoT systems implementation and risk mitigation. Led by University of Washington’s Chuck Benson, community members interested in participating can contact Chuck at iotsys-tf@internet2.edu

Internet2's Chief Innovation Officer Florence Hudson continues her travels to gain insights into the R&E community issues and needs. Most recently, she participated in the University of Washington's 3rd Annual TechConnect Conference with a presentation about future-proofing your career and environment through diversity and inclusion, and co-presented with University of Washington's Chuck Benson on Internet of Things (IoT) systems on a campus. She then traveled to Virginia Tech, to better understand smart campus opportunities, researcher needs, and IoT, and to join CIO Scott Midkiff for a discussion about the journey from engineer to Senior VP and gender diversity in engineering and IT. Following Virginia Tech, Florence keynoted and participated in a panel on IoT impacts on both urban and rural America at the 2016 Broadband Communities Summit in Austin, thanks to Mark Johnson from MCNC who hosted her keynote and panel. And this week she keynoted at KINBERCON 2016, speaking about key information and communications technology trends in the R&E community plus the need for more diversity in IT. Many thanks to Kelli Trosvig and Chuck Benson @ the University of Washington; Scott Midkiff, Scot Ransbottom and Aaron Bond @Virginia Tech; Mark Johnson @MCNC; and Wendy Huntoon @KINBER for their hospitality the past month!

Please make plans to  participate in an exciting line up of CINO sessions at the upcoming 2016 Global Summit in Chicago May 15-18. CINO sessions will feature Healthcare and Life Sciences, Smart Campus, IoT Working Group, End-to-End Trust & Security Working Group, Distributed Big Data & Analytics Working Group, Gender Diversity, and Innovation Development globally.
