The conversation around the cloud in higher education has progressed beyond the question of “should we go to the cloud?” to “ok, we’re in the cloud – how do we do things better?” Fortunately, there are a number of opportunities at the upcoming Internet2 Global Summit in San Diego, CA to hear from and collaborate with your peer institutions and organizations on specific cloud services or cloud practices in general.
In early 2018, the InCommon Assurance Advisory Committee (AAC) changed its name, its mission, and welcomed a number of new members. The new Community Trust and Assurance Board (CTAB) succeeds the AAC, recognizing the expanded role and responsibilities for this group.
New and updated containers have been released for three of the four main TIER (Trust and Identity in Education and Research) components. The TIER Packaging Working Group and TIER developers and architects have now released containerized version of Shibboleth (v3.3.1), Grouper (v2.3.0), and COmanage (v3.1.0). The working group is also working to release a container for midPoint.
Nearing the halfway point in their year-long work to adopt one or more TIER components, the Campus Success Program participants will gather at the 2018 Internet2 Global Summit (May 6-9) to hear reports from working groups and develop a work plan that will take them to October.
The InCommon Federation Manager — the online tool that site administrators use to create, edit, and maintain their metadata — has undergone a number of enhancements and updates in the last six months. This was enabled by the 2017 fee increase, which provided resources to hire a DevOps manager and consultants to develop a roadmap and make improvements.
Since this past December, the Attributes for Collaboration and Federation Working Group has reached over 130 institutions and organizations through an online survey and personal interviews as the group has examined participation in the Research and Scholarship Category (R&S).

The Internet2 Network team continues to refine the overall traffic management plan, using the ability of MPLS to convert the segments on the backbone from discrete, multiple 100G channels to using LAGs when 100G segments are added.
