Internet2 WaveCo provides a unified service for all Internet2 members looking for long-term, static, point-to-point circuits to cost-effectively extend their network connectivity. Circuits are provisioned either by Internet2 over the Internet2-controlled optical infrastructure or by Level 3 Communications, on their nationwide footprint.

Internet2 WaveCo has recently expanded its service offerings. In addition to circuits provided by Level 3, WaveCo offers circuits provisioned by Internet2 across the Internet2 infrastructure. The combination of these two circuit service capabilities, unified under WaveCo, provides an end-to-end solution for our members whether they need to extend their network or to meet new bandwidth requirements.

WaveCo Services from Internet2
Circuits across Internet2 Network node locations can be flexible in bandwidth and duration. For example, if a member organization needed a dedicated circuit to meet the application requirements of a bandwidth intensive, long term experiment, WaveCo can quickly turn up capacity . Circuits can be provisioned as whole waves or based on standard SONET bandwidth increments up to 10 Gbps.
WaveCo's Internet2 circuit services are:
- Set up by the Internet2 Network Operations Center
- Ranging in bandwidths from 50 Mbps to a full 10 Gbps wave or multiple 10 Gbps waves
- Ordered for a period of weeks up to years
- Reserved up to one year in advance
- Based on a fee for service that is based on distance, bandwidth, duration and protection scheme

WaveCo Services from a Provider
With availability anywhere on the Level 3 network, WaveCo provider-based circuits from Level 3 reach beyond the Internet2 Network. WaveCo has secured the cost advantage of national-scale aggregated rates, which are especially beneficial for regional networks that wish to extend their reach were a dark fiber solution is unavailable, too expensive, or operationally impractical.
Level 3 is significantly expanding its presence in Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets. Correspondingly, WaveCo coverage is growing, providing regional research and education networks access to locations they couldn’t previously reach, particularly in metropolitan areas.
WaveCo's Level 3 circuit services are:
- Offered to Internet2 members at the best competitive rates
- Digital and optical circuits anywhere on Level 3's network footprint
WaveCo's Level 3 circuit services may be purchased by:
- Internet2 research and education members and their partners
Internet2 WaveCo and FiberCo
Internet2 WaveCo complements the successful model of the Internet2 FiberCo service, which provides the research and education community the ability to cost-effectively purchase dedicated dark fiber on a nationwide scale. By providing dedicated circuits, as well as fiber, Internet2 enables a wide variety of bandwidth-intensive applications under development at member campuses and research labs today. The WaveCo and FiberCo services are part of Internet2’s commitment to community control of fundamental networking infrastructure.
