End-to-End Research Support

End-to-End Research Support

The Internet2 Research Support Center, under the direction of the Chief Technology Officer, was created specifically to provide comprehensive end-to-end support to the research community for the use of Internet2 Network infrastructure and related services.

In combination with technological solutions developed expressly to advance research, the Internet2 community regularly collaborates with national initiatives by exchanging collegial expertise, identifying research resources and providing embedded project support.

The research and education (R&E) community has a rich heritage of producing technology innovations and breakthrough discoveries that benefit people across the globe. Today, collaboration among geographically-distributed scientists is a fact of university-based research. Many important scientific questions simply cannot be answered without computational power, networking services, and trust and identity infrastructure far beyond the ordinary. Advances in scientific technologies are generating ever-higher mountains of “big data.” Computational technologies and tools that can handle very large-scale data modeling, integration, and analysis are in huge demand, and are critical to a better understanding of the big data generated through research.

“We’re looking to create unconstrained paths between researchers and resources.”

—Jim Bottum, Clemson CIO and Vice Provost for Computing and IT

Through technology initiatives like the Internet2 Innovation Platform, research collaborations are equipped with a new level of support from: unconstrained bandwidth to enable more efficient big data collaboration and to create new applications; a new class of network programmability and control with software-defined networks (SDN); and pioneering concepts like the Science DMZ*, providing a blueprint for architecting and optimizing local networks to support the passing of high-bandwidth research data without sacrificing security—enabling campuses and collaborating organizations to fully leverage their investments in 100GE connectivity and provide the most robust scientific research environments.

Internet2 Trust and Identity support of researchers includes COmanage, a collaboration management platform allowing organizations to meet science and research objectives using collaboration tools in a secure and effective framework, the InCommon Research and Scholarship Category, and the adoption of the ORCID identifier in the common set of attributes for research and higher education.
