Past Strategic Planning Efforts
In late 1996, representatives from 34 universities gathered in a Chicago area hotel and committed to a vision: the establishment of a project to foster the development of networking capabilities that would not only support research and education, but would also eventually make their way into the global commercial Internet. So began Internet2.
In late 2007, the Council chairs and vice chairs gathered once again in a Chicago area hotel to begin the work of leading Internet2 into its second decade. From that meeting came the beginning of a new community-based strategic planning process to guide Internet2 plans and priorities. Use the interactive Strategy Portal below to find out how the Strategic Plan propels the Internet2 community into the future of networking. Click on the tabs to look at the plan from different perspectives.
In 2010, while Internet2 continued on the path envisioned in the strategic plan, new opportunities and a number of synergistic efforts, presented by emerging technologies, rapid changes in the environment supporting the U.S. R&E Community, and important changes within the Internet2 organization (including changes in leadership) required Internet2 to evolve and adapt its strategic directions. Recognizing these significant changes, the Internet2 Council Officers (ICO) developed a draft plan (pdf) identifying some important additions to and a realignment of the Internet2 Strategic Plan. The ICO requested community review and comment, and conducted a webinar-based open community forum to gather input. The slides presented (pdf) are available.
