Internet2 University Members Have Opportunity
to Participate in Unique Sun Microsystems’ Software Licensing
Agreement
More than 200 Internet2 Member Universities May Benefit from Guaranteed Price and Communities of Support
ANN ARBOR, Mich. and SANTA CLARA, Calif. – August 23,
2004 – Internet2® and Sun Microsystems, Inc.
(NASDAQ: SUNW), an Internet2 Corporate Partner, announced that
they have signed an agreement under which the more than 200 Internet2
university members will be offered a unique annual, renewable
subscription for nearly 100 Sun software products at a low and
predictable price. Through this relationship more than 3 million
students and faculty will be eligible to benefit from Sun’s
comprehensive and broad range of open standard software products
in the classroom, at home, and in research and development.
The Sun EduSoft™ portfolio (http://www.sun.com/edu/edusoft),
upon which this subscription is based, consolidates nearly 100 Sun
enterprise software products into a single distribution. The portfolio
includes software for Enterprise Directory Management; Application/Integration
Servers and Messaging; Application Development; Security; Desktop
Applications; Email, Calendar and Collaboration; Operating Systems;
Systems Administration and Internetworking technologies. The software
may be site licensed by Internet2 university members for any non-profit
purpose, including administrative use on campus or within teaching
hospital environments, and for services to members’ extended
communities.
“Several Internet2 member universities have been seeking alternate
software licensing models to realistically manage the increasing complexity
of the IT infrastructure landscape. Since its founding, Sun Microsystems
has been a strong partner for higher education and continues to demonstrate
that commitment with this agreement,” said Michael Gettes, Senior
Technology Architect and Strategist at Duke University. “Sun’s
software line has components supporting and enhancing Internet2’s
middleware efforts, application development, critical services infrastructure
(e-mail, calendaring and web servers), research computing, and desktop
applications. These components help to fill out an open standards
based infrastructure for the academic, administrative, and research
enterprises of a university.”
In addition to guaranteed pricing for the EduSoft portfolio software,
a key result of this agreement is the creation of joint "Networks
of Expertise" among the Internet2 membership. Networks of Expertise
will be hosted by Internet2 members and supported by Sun. The Networks
will develop implementation architectures and best practice guidelines,
and will provide a cost-effective, first-line support mechanism.
“Sun software programs for higher education continue Sun’s
long-standing commitment to open standards and collaboration for academic
users, institutions and open source developer communities,” said
Kim Jones, vice president of Global Education and Research at Sun
Microsystems. “Extending the benefits of Sun’s software
to Internet2’s university members made strategic sense as higher
education institutions rely on open standard technologies.”
“Through this partnership with Sun Microsystems, we are providing
Internet2 members yet another opportunity to innovate with advanced
networking capabilities,” said Douglas Van Houweling, president
and CEO of Internet2. “We look forward to creating similar agreements
for the products and services provided by more of our corporate members
in order to benefit higher education and encourage mutual collaboration
and technology transfer.”
