Research

The Office of the CTO is responsible for developing a strategic technical roadmap for the organization to ensure the research and education community is positioned as the focal point for network technology innovation and development. Historically, developing advanced networking technology is at the very heart of Internet2. Members have access to a unique, nationwide high-performance network infrastructure that removes the boundaries of today's Internet and provides an unsurpassed testbed for research. In the coming year, the Office of the CTO will focus on the following:

  • Revitalize research partnership, development, engagement
  • Create an integrated network and services architecture for Internet2
  • Create a roadmap for Internet2 and our community to be in the vanguard of Internet technology

Event Spotlight

Universities are making major investments in facilities-based optical networking, driven by the need to support high-end research activities. On Tuesday, January 23, Clemson CIO, Jim Bottum, moderated a discussion on the current landscape from the perspective of researchers, federal R&D leads, and campus/lab CIOs. The community will develop a white paper on consensus recommendations with particular reference to input from CIOs and federal funding agencies. Speakers include keynote speaker Bill St. Arnaud (Green IT), followed by talks on well-architected networks for major science projects (including Don Middleton of NCAR for climatology and Matthew Trunnell of MIT/Harvard's Broad Institute for genomics), a panel on bootstrapping institutional capabilities (including Gwen Jacobs of Hawaii, Ruth Marinshaw of UNC, and Adam Stone from LBL), and success stories (including Brent Draney of NERSC and Eli Dart of ESnet on the national laboratory side, and Joe Breen of Utah, Ron Hutchins of GA Tech, and Tad Reynales of UCSD's Calit2).

Research Support Center

The Internet2 community, Internet2 Network and associated international, regional, campus and lab infrastructure and services are tremendous assets for researchers nationwide. Internet2 is an advantageous ally in supporting the research community and an important partner in accomplishing research goals. The Internet2 Research Support Center will offer visible, proactive and comprehensive researcher support—from proposal to publication.

Resources for Researchers

The infrastructure, services and collaborative environment of the Internet2 community represent tremendous assets for researchers nationwide. Find out more about the wide range of resources Internet2 provides to researchers—from dark fiber acquisition, to static and dynamic circuits, to enabling middleware and advanced applications such as cloud services. Together they create a platform reliable enough for the most exacting production applications, robust and flexible enough for the most extreme research, development and experimentation our community can imagine. See Resources for Researchers for more details.

Internet2 CTO Rotator Program

The Internet2 CTO Rotator program offers qualified persons the opportunity to work full-time on a collaborative project with a staff member of the Office of the CTO, Internet2, with whom the project's contents are jointly described and proposed. The project start date and duration, which can range from three months to one year, are selected in advance. Part-time arrangements may be made under exceptional and compelling circumstances.
