Internet2 welcomed some new members during 2006 and saw others increase their involvement in our community. The fifth year of the Sponsored Education Group Participant (SEGP) program saw the participating number of state education networks increase to 38. The SEGP program was established in 2001 at the request of university members so that non-member educational institutions with which they collaborate could access the Internet2 backbone network.
Through the SEGP program, and with the support of the Internet2 K20 Initiative, more than 46,000 U.S. K-12 schools, community colleges, libraries, performing arts centers, and museums now have access to the Internet2 backbone network. By bringing together innovators at all levels of research and academia, the program has encouraged the development and use of new technologies to advance education resources and capabilities in the United States.
Google and Ruckus joined the Internet2 community as corporate members, and corporate members Level 3, Ciena, Infinera, and Meriton increased their involvement to become Corporate Partners, signifying a commitment by each of them of more than $1 million in contributions directed towards Internet2 member institutions. The number of Internet2 International Partners also increased with new links with research and education networking organizations in India, Pakistan, and the United Arab Emirates.
Agreements with organizations such as the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) and the Department of Energy's (DOE) Energy Sciences Network (ESnet), will enable these organizations to work with other Internet2 members on the development of secure, reliable, and advanced networking solutions in support of research.
