pS-Performance Toolkit

The pS-Performance Toolkit is a product of the pS-PS development project. It provides the easiest way to deploy a perfSONAR network performance measurement node. It includes a set of network diagnostic tools to debug network performance issues and can be used with no configuration work. With a small amount of configuration using a web-based Graphical User Interface, the pS-Performance Toolkit host can run regular tests and provide an ongoing record of network performance.

Purpose
The pS-Performance Toolkit is currently being used by the USATLAS project to verify network performance between LHC Tier1 and Tier2 sites, and is beginning to be used by some Tier3 sites to verify network performance to Tier2 sites. The pS-Performance Toolkit is a particularly attractive option for virtual communities such as LHC because it minimizes how much the end research groups need to understand about network technology allowing them to focus on the real science they are attempting to accomplish.
History
The original idea for the pS-Performance Toolkit came from the Internet2 Network Performance Workshop series. The original format of these workshops consisted of a day of tool installation (e.g. installing the Web100-enhanced kernel and other performance tools) followed by some time to test and use them. This particular format did not allow enough time to get to the primary reason many participants choose to sign up: solving network performance problems. As a way of making these workshops more hands-on and useful to attendees, Internet2 staff looked at methods of delivery to allow bootable access to the tools used in network troubleshooting.
At the same time, Internet2 was actively involved with the International consortium developing perfSONAR. As an offshoot of that project, Internet2 began collaborating with developers from ESnet, RNP, and other U.S. researchers interested in having a Perl-based implementation of the perfSONAR framework. As these tools developed, Internet2 added them to the, then named, "Network Performance Toolkit." With the integration of perfSONAR tools, the results of both passive and active measurements can be accessed via perfSONAR measurement points around the world, enabling the early detection of performance issues and allowing troubleshooters access to information across multiple domains.
Internet2 continues to support the Toolkit and has added this product to the psps.perfsonar collaboration. New releases of the pS-Performance Toolkit are made available on a quarterly basis, encompassing the efforts of the entire North American project team and are rigorously tested by team members in Brazil and other South American sites.
