The Internet2 Performance Initiative
The Internet2 Performance Initiative includes any interested member of Internet2 and ESnet. To this end, the following areas are emphasized:
- Developing and encouraging the development of tools to collect measurements that are deemed useful by the community.
- Participating in standards-making bodies, such as OGF, IETF, and international consortiums like GLIF.
- In collaboration with other national and international networks, developing and deploying interoperable frameworks for performance measurement.
- Providing hands-on training in the tools and frameworks jointly developed by the community.
- Facilitating lateral communication within the Internet2 organization
to the various initiatives, communities, working
groups, partnerships, middleware
activities, and Backbone
Network Infrastructure.
- Working closely with specific application communities (such as LHC and e-VLBI) to ensure the tools will provide the types of data needed by their applications.

Eric Boyd
Eric Boyd, Ph.D. is the Deputy Technical Officer for Internet2. The Performance Initiative explores the wide range of end-to-end performance problems encountered by users that hinder their computing experience.
Eric holds a BA degree from Princeton University and an MS and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Michigan, writing his thesis on the "Performance Evaluation and Improvement of High Performance Architectures and Applications." He served as an engineering principal in the Unix Groups of both Compaq/Digital and Hewlett-Packard, writing advanced performance analysis tools for enterprise-class servers. Eric led the research and development group at SolidSpeed Networks, creating such products as a content delivery network, a distributed peer-to-peer website performance measuring system, and a software-based global load balancer.
