Smithsonian's Secretary Clough discusses new avenues for digital content and programming at Internet2 Annual Meeting

WASHINGTON, D.C.—April 23, 2013—Internet2, the nation’s premier advanced technology community for research and education, today announced a major collaboration with the Smithsonian at the 2013 Internet2 annual meeting. Internet2 President and CEO H. David Lambert made the announcement to more than 800 technology, research and education leaders from around the world.

"Internet2 works with numerous institutions to enable schools and community anchor institutions to benefit from advanced networking, applications and digital content," said Lambert, president and chief executive officer of Internet2. "Through this initiative, Smithsonian staff and researchers will share historical and cultural collections, access remote instruments, and promote interactivity with professors, researchers, teachers and libraries, creating a terrific opportunity for our institutions to forge a closer relationship with the Smithsonian."

"Internet2's annual meeting theme of Transforming Global Research and Education is fitting for the Smithsonian since we have been dedicated to scientific research and informal education since our founding," said Smithsonian Secretary Wayne Clough. "In addition, broadening access has been a goal for the Smithsonian for the past several years as we strive to digitize our collection and make our expertise and programs more widely available through the public internet."

With approximately 137 million objects in its collection, more than 2,000 learning resources tied to state standards and available online for free, 19 museums, nine research facilities, 20 libraries and the National Zoological Park, the Smithsonian is, more than ever, dependent on computing power and technology to accomplish its mission, and now with Internet2 we can bring it all together and reach researchers at universities all over the world, added Clough.

In addition to content sharing, other collaborations being discussed between the Smithsonian and Internet2 include a live demonstration or "theater" center at the Smithsonian that could showcase Internet2's audio and videoconferencing technology to live and Internet2-connected audiences.

There are 66,000 anchor institutions linked to Internet2 by regional partnerships, and more than 400 research universities, non-profit organizations, corporations and 100 international partners.

Shelton Waggener, senior vice president of Internet2, and Chris Liedel, president of Smithsonian Enterprises, lead the collaboration between the two organizations. Smithsonian Enterprises includes HD video content, the Smithsonian Channel, Smithsonian magazine, Air & Space magazine, Smithsonian.com and several mobile apps.

The Internet2 Annual Conference runs from Sunday, April 21 to Wednesday, April 24 at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, VA. For the latest annual meeting details, schedule and streaming video, go to http://bit.ly/2013Internet2AnnualMeeting.
