Higher Networking Speeds: The Infinera platform supports new and higher networking speeds. A platform that scales to 40Gbps per interface and potentially higher, is increasingly upgraded when the community requires it, representing a four-fold increase in the current interface speed. This benefit has important immediate potential for high energy physicists and computational clusters that would need interface speeds greater than 10 Gbps.
Connection to the Commercial Internet: Peering with commercial Internet services and content providers through Internet2 Network connections offer potential cost efficiencies to Network participants, particularly campuses. Additionally, the exchange between the commercial Internet and the advanced capacity of the Internet2 Network will enable access to high bandwidth content, new methods of content delivery, and advanced services. The capacity and nature of the network also will offer research traffic an unimpeded facility and allow for commercial traffic to flow over the same infrastructure, and provide network researchers real traffic characteristics to better understand the network.
Dedicated Wavelengths: Internet2 WaveCo and Level 3 Communications will provision circuits – optical carrier and digital signal – for regional networks and other Internet2 participants needing to cost-effectively extend their connectivity anywhere on the Level 3 optical network – at aggregated rates. This is especially advantageous for regional networks that wish to extend their reach to sites where building out an optical infrastructure is not cost-effective.
Access to Dark Fiber: Through the agreement with Level 3, Internet2 FiberCo will continue to offer intercity and metro dark fiber, and colocation services at competitive rates to the U.S. research and education community. The carrier relationship provides the Internet2 Network access to more than 6,000 on-net facilities.
Professional Services: Internet2 FiberCo is making available a suite of professional services that range from consulting on fiber availability and acquisition, to outsourced network operation center services, equipment procurement, testing and deployment, and asset tracking to support the growth of Regional Optical Networks. Internet2’s strong relationship with the industry brings expertise and experience to network connectors at extremely competitive rates.
Other Services: Private networks, national in scope (ESnet, HealthNet); advanced video services (HD video conferencing, content delivery).
