The Internet2 IP Network:
The Level 3 carrier agreement provides the community unprecedented control over the networking infrastructure, without taking on the risks of equipment sparing and obsolescence as well as the burden of substantial operational responsibilities. Since Level 3 provides a standard carrier SLA for the waves on the system, the IP network will be just as reliable as the previous Abilene backbone, which over the years has been close to 99.999% uptime (less than 5 1/2 minutes of down time) a year.
