IP Network

The Internet2 IP Network is the most reliable and scalable advanced IP network available anywhere in the world. Over the past decade, the Internet2 backbone network has supported the most demanding network applications and has been used to set numerous long-distance Internet world speed records. The Internet2 IP Network supports IPv4, IPv6, scalable multicast, and other advanced networking protocols. The Internet2 IP Network also has the ability to increase its capacity more easily and flexibly than any other R&E network in the world.

Any Internet2 member organization may connect to the Internet2 IP Network through an Internet2 Connector. Internet2 Members may also sponsor non-member organizations and statewide education networks to use the Internet2 IP Network.

The Internet2 IP Network:

The Level 3 carrier agreement provides the community unprecedented control over the networking infrastructure, without taking on the risks of equipment sparing and obsolescence as well as the burden of substantial operational responsibilities. Since Level 3 provides a standard carrier SLA for the waves on the system, the IP network will be just as reliable as the previous Abilene backbone, which over the years has been close to 99.999% uptime (less than 5 1/2 minutes of down time) a year.
