Internet2 Network Fees for 2011
Organizations that would like access to the Internet2 Network should consider the various costs associated with setting up and maintaining their high-performance network connectivity. Some of those costs are in the form of fees paid directly to Internet2, others may include telecommunications costs, cost-sharing with the local regional network, and equipment costs required to take advantage of Internet2's advanced services. This fees page addresses only fees paid directly to Internet2.

Internet2's network-related fees are divided into two categories: network participation fees and network connection fees. Network participation fees are incurred by all member organizations that access the Internet2 Network through an Internet2 Network Connector. Network connection fees are incurred by organizations called Connectors that maintain a direct physical connection to the Internet2 Network.
Typically a network connection fee is assessed to a regional network that provides the direct physical path between the Internet2 member and the Internet2 backbone network. Individual members are assessed a network participation fee for the use of this connection.
To accommodate organizations that are not direct Internet2 members, for example K-12 schools, libraries, etc., one or more Internet2 members may sponsor a Sponsored Education Group Participant (SEGP). Internet2 currently has 39 SEGPs, which are typically aggregations of educational organizations brought together in a statewide or other wide-area network within a state. Examples of these aggregations are statewide K-12 networks, community college networks, and similar collectives of educational organizations. The SEGP provides a statewide participation fee to cover such entities.
In support of the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) Rural Health Care Pilot Program (RHCPP), organizations covered by a single RHCPP award will be assessed a single Internet2 Network Usage Fee. All participation fees are annual. The 2011 fees are as follows:
- Network Participant: See fee column in table at http://www.internet2.edu/membership/dues.html
- Sponsored Education Group Participant (based on the following formula): the number of Representatives in the State U.S. House Delegation multiplied by $2,000 + $30,000
- Rural Health Care Pilot Program Participant: $25,000
Internet2 Network connection fees are based on the allowable bandwidth (i.e., capacity) of the connection from the institution to the Internet2 Network. Network Connection fees may be assessed annually, quarterly, or monthly by organizations designated as Internet2 Network Connectors. An organization, typically a regional network, becomes a Connector upon signing an Internet2 Network Connection Agreement, which enables a direct physical connection to the Internet2 Network. The fee options provide a pathway for enhanced hybrid network capabilities supported by the Internet2 Network. The following table depicts the allowable bandwidth options and their annual, quarterly and monthly fees:
| Bandwidth | Annual Fee | Quarterly Fee* | Monthly Fee* |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2x5G | $375,000 | $96,563 | $32,500 |
| 10G | $480,000 | $123,600 | $41,600 |
| 2x10G | $525,000 | $135,188 | $45,500 |
*Monthly and Quarterly payment plans require electronic funds transfer and include a convenience fee.
In addition to the traditional Internet protocol (IP) based connections, Internet2 now operates Internet2 ION, a revolutionary, virtual circuit network service that provides dedicated bandwidth for the most demanding applications. ION provides on-demand point-to-point short-term circuits that can be provisioned by the user in near-real time. With Internet2 support of true hybrid networking, connectors will be able to use their connections for both IP and ION. For details on how you can take advantage of ION, please contact network@internet2.edu.
Internet2 also offers Internet2 Network on-net circuits to Internet2 members through its WaveCo brand. Please contact waveco@internet2.edu for additional information.
