Cloud Services
Internet2 NET+ Services offers customized cloud services from third-party vendors using the infrastructure facilities of the Internet2 Network and the federated authentication and authorization services available through InCommon. Before a service is offered to the community, it is put through a series of phases, until it is made available to all eligible institutions. Description: Several universities are working with Internet2 to develop a program that will provide a community-friendly self-service portal created and managed by an AWS solution provider; discounts on eligible AWS services; and expanded payment options that include invoicing and grant-friendly pre-payment services, as well as traditional credit card payment services. The new offering will allow universities to aggregate individual and institutional usage of AWS to achieve cost savings and improved performance and functionality. This innovative program will also address data transfer costs.

Description: Dell Cloud On-Demand is a multi-tenant Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) hosted in secured Dell datacenters. For large enterprises, the Dell Cloud provides on-demand computing capacity as an extension to existing datacenter environments with the same benefits and IT efficiencies delivered through on-premise VMware virtualized infrastructure. For medium and small businesses, the Dell Cloud On-Demand enables you to access similar computing capabilities as large organizations without having to build and maintain your own datacenter.

Description: North Carolina State University (NCSU) will provide "virtual computing lab (VCL) cycles" on machines located in MCNC data center, and VCL management services for campuses that have their own hardware and wish to federate with the NCSU offering. IBM will offer the Academic Initiative (AI) to AI-participating schools at no charge, running on VCL. IBM will also offer a total of approximately $100K in grants to participating schools for the development of additional VCL enhancements, improvements or adaptations.

Description: Working with Florida Lambda Rail and several other institutions, AT&T will be offering its AT&T Synaptic Storage as a ServiceSM and AT&T Synaptic Compute as a ServiceSM through NET+. These are secure cloud-based on-demand storage and compute services that quickly and easily scale to academic, research and administrative needs, providing benefits of reduced TCO, dynamic resource allocation, scalability and reduced time-to-publication. R&E institutions with grant based compliance and capacity requirements and growing capacity needs will be most interested in these services. Integration options provided for Synaptic Compute as a Service include portal, VMware API, VMware vCloud Connector and VMware vCloud Director.

Description: In an extraordinary partnership with the Internet2 research community, the Internet2 Office of the Chief Technology Officer, Internet2 NET+ Services and Microsoft, a series of research-focused workshops will be held covering a range of scientific domains including Genomics and Bioinformatics, Social Sciences, the Physical Sciences and Life Sciences. As of February 2013 three workshops have been held and more are being planned. These workshops are open to researchers from the respective domains of science, to cyberinfrastructure professionals, librarians and others responsible for data preservation and curation. CIOs and university vice presidents for research are encouraged to attend. The purpose of the workshops is to provide input to Microsoft that will be used in enhancing support for academic research.
