Internet2 Middleware Initiative awarded NSF grant to enhance science and research collaboration (25-October-2010)

Key projects include:

MACE (Middleware Architecture Committee for Education) administers a Uniform Resource Name (URN) namespace, supporting the assignment of unique, global, persistent names to resources of various kinds by MACE and its delegates. MACE also administers an Object Identifier (OID) arc for identifying resources of various kinds for Internet2/MACE projects and working groups.

Shibboleth® Federated Single Sign-On Software: open-source web single sign-on and federating software. See an overview of Shibboleth. (pdf)

Grouper™: software used to handle groups and access management across applications and track information such as campus affiliations or roles. See an overview of Grouper. (pdf)

InCert: Open Source Client Certificate Installation and Device Configuration Tool Pilot Project

COmanage: Collaborative Organization Management: a software platform that eases distributed authentication and access management for a group of collaborative applications. See an overview of COmanage. (pdf)

MACE-Dir(ectories) Working Group and eduPerson and Related Schema: the MACE-Dir working group looks at how to describe common identity information for campus and federated relationships. MACE-DIR's many projects include the eduPerson, eduCourse, and eduOrg directory schema.

Scalable Privacy: In September 2012, Internet2 received a two-year grant from the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for the first year of a two-year project to work with the research and education community to build privacy infrastructure and tools to help individuals preserve their privacy and strengthen the nation's identity ecosystem, in support of the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace (NSTIC).

Social and Organizational Identities Working Group: discussing the use of OAuth and other authentication methods from the various social networks, including a Social2SAML gateway service.
