Spring 2010 Internet2 Member Meeting
Registration opens on Monday, February 15, for the Spring 2010 Internet2 Member Meeting, scheduled for April 26-28, 2010, in Arlington, Virginia. Internet2 Member Meetings bring the member community together for interactive discussions about new and ongoing work and provide a venue for members to make connections and form new collaborations. Additionally, the side meetings held in conjunction with the Member Meeting provide forums for Working Groups, SIGs and BoFs to meet face-to-face.
The 2010 meeting program will include the following tracks: Cyberinfrastructure and Advanced Applications in Action; Federal Agency Perspectives; Middleware; Network Planning and Engineering; Security for Advanced Networks; Teaching and Learning/K20; and The Future: What's Next for the Net? 2010 Internet2 IDEA Awards
Nominations are still being accepted for the 2010 Internet2 Driving Exemplary Applications (IDEA) Award! Award winners are establishing new frontiers in the application of networking technology, and are considered role models for the entire research and education networking community. Detailed guidelines and submission criteria are available at www.internet2.edu/idea/. The submission deadline is February 28, 2010.
Open to established or new applications, the IDEA Award was created in 2006 to recognize and encourage innovative applications of advanced network technology that have made—or promise to make—the most significant impact on the research and education community. Winners will be announced at the Spring 2010 Internet2 Member Meeting, April 26-28, in Arlington, Virginia. Winners will be given a netcast track session at the meeting. A letter of recognition from Internet2 leadership and the AMSAC Council will also be sent to the winning project institutions. In addition to receiving publicity at the meeting, winners will also be recognized in handouts, press releases, the Internet2 website, newsletters, and other materials.
Cisco TelePresence Service for Research and Education
Internet2 and NLR have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) agreeing to collaborate on developing and deploying a unified Cisco TelePresence service offering for the research and education community. Recognizing the powerful benefits of TelePresence for enabling new levels of collaboration and for breaking down geographic barriers among researchers and educators – nationally and internationally – the two organizations will be combining their respective expertise and reach.
NLR operates a Cisco TelePresence Exchange, located in Kansas City, Missouri. Over 70 Cisco TelePresence systems in institutions in 12 US states and 3 other countries are already or will soon be linked in to this Exchange and will now be able to use the joint service to have conferences between Internet2 and NLR members. Introducing NYSERNet's Global Summit Project
Over the last five years, New York’s K-12 community has partnered with NYSERNet to bring advanced, high-performance networking to elementary, middle school and high school classrooms. Today, schools throughout Western New York, the Southern Tier, Central New York, the Capital Region, the Adirondacks, and Eastern Long Island all have access to the NYSERNet Research and Education (R&E) Network with egress to Internet2. In 2010, schools throughout the Hudson Valley and the suburbs north of New York City plan to connect to the R&E network.
The Global Summit Project is an opportunity for one classroom from each Regional Information Center (RIC) to showcase and discuss its experiences using technologies and applications enabled by Internet2 and the regional R&E networks. During the Spring 2010 semester students and teachers from grades 6 through 12 will address global issues with a local focus or local issues that have global implications. The students will integrate technologies and applications available over the R&E network and Internet2 to support their efforts. Some projects under consideration include: soil and water analysis using a remote electron microscope, creating virtual environments to simulate science experiments, growing crystals in a weightless environment, and creating a virtual orchestra to perform a virtual concert.
The Global Summit Project will take place over several days, May 24 through May 28, 2010, on the NYSERNet R&E Network and over Internet2. Collaborative Effort Speeds Earthquake Imagery to aid Haiti's Recovery
A collaborative effort of the University of Puerto Rico, Internet2, NYSERNET, and Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) recently transported critical imagery data from Port-au-Prince and other areas of Haiti devastated by the January 12 earthquake. The imagery was collected by RIT's Wildfire Airborne Sensing Program (WASP) high-tech imaging system, which combines high-resolution color and thermal infrared imagery, while a Leica light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensor was used for precise 3-D range measurements. Both systems were integrated into a Piper Navajo aircraft operated by Kucera International, an Ohio-based aerial mapping company.
Funded by the World Bank, and in collaboration with ImageCat Inc., the plane's five-day flight plan covered the worst-hit areas, beginning on January 21. Approximately 960 GB of raw imagery data was transferred to hard disk and then piped from the University of Puerto Rico to RIT leveraging Internet2 Network provided by NYSERNet. Network engineers from the University of Puerto Rico, Florida International University, NYSERNET and RIT's Information and Technology Services worked around the clock for several days to optimize network connectivity between Puerto Rico and RIT.
RIT scientists and graduate students worked through each night to process the data, creating 3-D layered image maps showing infrastructure damage, fires, chemical spills and surface contamination on lakes or ponds. Recovery crews are using this unique dataset to gain critical insight into the extent of earthquake damage and to guide their reconstruction efforts. Learn more.
Steven Carmody Receives Brown University Excellence Award for Innovation
Steven Carmody, project lead for the Shibboleth development for Internet2 and member of the Middleware Architecture Committee for Education (MACE), has been awarded the 2010 Brown University Excellence Award for Innovation for his role in the Internet2 Middleware Initiative. As the leader of Internet2's Shibboleth project, Steven developed architectures, policy structures, practical technologies, and an open source implementation to support inter-institutional sharing of web resources subject to access controls. This innovation has the promise to simplify access to services on the web and lowers the barriers to effective collaboration among researchers and students around the world.
Excellence Awards recognize staff members whose outstanding contributions have uniquely reflected the values of the Brown University community. The Excellence Award for Innovation is presented to an individual or team that has developed and/or implemented an innovative program, service, policy, or process that has had a resoundingly positive impact on a specific department, Brown University, or the greater community.
InCommon Welcomes 200th Participating Organization
Augsburg College in Minneapolis has become the 200th participant in the InCommon Federation. "Augsburg is an excellent example of the direction of InCommon's recent growth," says Kevin Morooney, chair of the InCommon Steering Committee.
When institutions join InCommon, their faculty, researchers, students, and staff can use their organizational IDs and passwords to access on-campus and off-campus services, rather than maintaining multiple passwords and usernames. As a result, people use the same credentials to access such third-party services as library databases, multimedia content, research information and services provided by U.S. government agencies, and career center systems and tools. InCommon to Sponsor CAMP, Advanced CAMP
InCommon has assumed responsibility for the CAMP program (Campus Architect and Middleware Planning) and has announced the dates for two key 2010 events. The "InCommon CAMP: Exploring and Supporting Federated Access" workshop will take place June 21-23, 2010, and the "InCommon Advance CAMP: The Second Identity Services Summit" workshop will be held June 23-25, 2010. Details will be announced on the InCommon website in mid-February.
Winter 2010 Joint Techs
From January 31 to February 4, the University of Utah hosted the annual ESCC/Internet2 Winter Joint Techs in Salt Lake City, Utah. This event was one of the best-attended, Joint Techs, with 273 attendees from around the world. This meeting included tutorials on circuit switching and preparing campuses for high-performance demands, as well as 34 plenary talks on campus networking, emerging technologies, infrastructure updates, and performance monitoring. The meeting hosted 17 BoFs and Working Group sessions, and 3 tours of the renown Scientific Computing Imaging Institute. Representatives from Brazil, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ireland, Japan, Kenya, Korea, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Taiwan joined their American colleagues to discuss the latest efforts in networking around the world. Emphasis on security (including recent DNSsec breaches) and IPv6 deployments colored talks related to both campus networking and the network infrastructure updates common to Joint Techs. After the meeting ended, side meetings by the ESnet Site Coordinator Committee (ESCC), GLIF, NetGurus, and NOAA occurred, concurrent with an IPv6 hands-on workshop. The Applications, Middleware, and Services Advisory Council (AMSAC) has continued its discussion on Internet2 Priority Setting and AMSAC Priorities, and met with representatives of the consulting firm engaged in the search for Internet2's new CEO to provide input regarding (1) what makes this a compelling opportunity, (2) what challenges the new CEO would face, and (3) what kind of person the community should be seeking.
The Architecture & Operations Advisory Council (AOAC) met on January 27 and endorsed a document describing a high-level implementation plan for the ION service over MPLS tunnels. This document is a follow on to the NTAC analysis of SONET vs MPLS in the Internet2 backbone. The analysis was earlier endorsed by the AOAC. Also, during the call, Internet2 staff described the installation schedule for the Juniper MX upgrades across the country which will be completed by mid-March. The council also reviewed information from the community CPS/TR consolidation call held in January.
The External Relations Advisory Council (ERAC) has met twice in 2010. The main topic of focus in the January 18 meeting was the CEO search. The February 1 call focused on the R&E community’s filing with the FCC on its National Broadband Plan, and discussion of BTOP rounds one and two. The committee also received an update on the search for the International Programs position.
On February 1, the Internet2 Governance & Nominations Committee declared the 2010 Advisory Councils election officially open. The election period concludes on Friday, February 19 at midnight PST. Internet2 is again leveraging the online voting service BigPulse, which provides security and anonymity. Only Executive Liaisons of members in good standing, as identified in the membership database, are eligible to vote. Each voter may cast only one ballot for the constituencies for which they are eligible based on member category. Votes will be acknowledged by email back to the individual voter, but the contents of the vote are anonymous.
The executive liaisons for university and affiliate members are eligible to vote for the CIO/Institution and researcher representatives, the executive liaisons for Corporate members may vote for the Industry representatives, and the executive liaisons for Regional Network members may vote for the Regional Network representatives.
