University Membership Application Requirements
Member universities are leading the Internet2 efforts to develop
the new networking capabilities and advanced applications necessary
to enable research and education into the next century. This
document provides general background information about participation
in Internet2 as a University Member.
I. Who Is Eligible For Regular Membership?
Currently, only institutions of higher education located in
the United States are eligible to apply for Regular Membership.
II. What Are The Criteria for Approval of a Regular Membership
Application?
Applicants must be making a definitive, substantial and continuing
commitment to the development, evolution and use of advanced
networking facilities and applications in the conduct of research
and education.
Internet2 members have estimated that they will spend at a
minimum $500,000 per year in order to be able to participate
in Internet2 activities Applicants should be committed to at
least this level of investment and/or more, depending upon their
own state of advanced networking preparedness.
Regular Member applicants should be committed to the goals
of Internet2 and in particular commit to the following goals:
Develop and demonstrate advanced network-based applications
for the purposes of research and/or education and create a project
team within the organization to support the development of such
applications.
Establishing broadband Internet connectivity on an end to end
basis
between and among Regular Member institutions and other related
development sites. Participants plan to make use of local aggregation
points called gigaPoPs and Regular Members should plan to join
and/or form a gigaPoP to achieve access to the Internet2 interconnect.
III. Membership Term and Fee
All membership applications are subject to the approval of
the UCAID Board of Trustees.
The currently established annual fee for Regular Membership
is $28,500. This fee is billed annually on a calendar year
basis. Membership in Internet2 is continuing, subject to
the member remaining in good standing regarding dues and
assessments and any additional policies or procedures established
by UCAID's Board of Trustees.
IV. Submission of Materials for Regular Membership
A. A letter should be submitted to Internet2 from the applicant's
Chief Executive Officer, formally applying for membership. The
letter should confirm the applicant's commitment to the mission
and goals of Internet2 and the criteria outlined above.
B. With the letter, a more detailed (no more than 2 pages)
statement of the applicant's status/progress towards meeting
the goals of:
End to end broadband connectivity, including:
- Campus network upgrades
- Participation/Formation of a gigaPoP
- Development of advanced applications
C. All relevant contact information for representatives from
the applying institution

What is UCAID's role with Internet2?
The University Corporation for Advanced Internet Development
(UCAID) is the formal organization formed to manage the activities
and programs of Internet2. A Board of Trustees composed primarily
of the Presidents of Internet2 Regular University Members governs
UCAID. It is incorporated as a 501c.3 non-profit organization,
and is the formal entity that collects member dues and fees
and manages expenditures associated with Internet2 projects.
