MAN LAN Configuration & Connectors

MAN LAN is an open exchange point for the research and education community. Connectors to the exchange point determine how their ports and interconnects are configured. For the Ethernet switch, this means that VLANs will be setup between connectors as needed - the connectors completely determine when and if VLANS between other connectors should be configured. Optical connections are also configured as needed and determined by the appropriate two connectors to the optical switches.

Connections are currently configured by contacting noc@manlan.iu.edu. The future is expected to bring automated configurations through connector control.

Ethernet Connections

Ethernet frame-based services are provided by a Cisco 6513 Ethernet switch that supports bandwidths at 1 and 10 GigE.  1GigE connections can be made with SX, LX/LH, or ZX optics via Cisco's GBIC offerings, 10GE LAN PHY connections can be made with either LR (1310nm) or ER (1550nm) optics. WAN PHY interfaces will be supported when they become available for the switch.

MAN LAN Optical Connections

MAN LAN optical connections are supported primarily by a Nortel Optical Multiservice Edge 6500 and a Nortel high density cross connect HDXc.  The Nortel equipment facilitates the connection and division into sub-channels of lambdas, including one enabled by the Internet Educational Equal Access Foundation (IEEAF), between MAN LAN and the NetherLight exchange point in Amsterdam managed by SURFnet. A Cisco ONS 15454 is available that supports SONET OC48 and OC192 and 10GE connections.

The MAN LAN optical facility is an open optical facility in that two connectors wishing to interconnect through the switch may always do so. Currently the connectors must send email to MAN LAN operations to configure such interconnections, but an automated procedure will be implemented when possible. Contact manlan@internet2.edu for more information.
