Through mutual agreements with similar organizations around the world, Internet2 is establishing ties that will help ensure the continued global interoperability of advanced networking, and enable collaboration between U.S. researchers, faculty, students and their overseas counterparts.

Internet2, NORDUnet, ESnet, SURFnet, CANARIE, and GÉANT To Build World's First 100G Intercontinental Transmission Links For Research and Education Community

Six of the world's leading research and education networks today announced their intent to build the world's first 100 gigabits-per-second (Gbps) intercontinental transmission links for research and education. Leaders from Internet2 (USA), NORDUnet, (Nordic countries), ESnet (U.S. Department of Energy), SURFnet (Netherlands), CANARIE (Canada), and GÉANT (Europe) made the announcement at the 2013 Internet2 Annual Meeting before 800 technology, education and research leaders. First-ever around-the-world network backup agreement signed among ORIENTplus, Internet2, TransPAC3 and CERNET to improve service for international researchers

Vital research collaborations involving China, Europe and the United States will be safeguarded through the first, major agreement among partners running the two main high-speed research and education (R&E) Internet routes across Asia, Europe and North America. By agreeing to provide reciprocal backup services via two 10 Gbps connections around the globe, the organisations involved will maximise connectivity and provide a stronger, more resilient service to researchers as they work together on major projects and share growing volumes of data. New high-speed internet for African research cooperation unveiled

DANTE, the operator of GÉANT, the pan-European research and education network; and UbuntuNet Alliance, the regional research and education network for Southern and Eastern Africa, announced on November 28th the launch of the UbuntuNet network, a high-speed Internet network connecting scientists and academics throughout Southern and Eastern Africa to peers in the region and to Europe, the first network of its kind in Africa.
