Deploying and Using Advanced Health Networks

Purpose: To review ways of deploying and using your health network.

Overview and expectations for this workshop.
This workshop will provide a "how to" approach to deploying and using a health network. We will examine approaches taken by existing networks and review applications using these networks, focusing on health information exchange and telehealth. The last 10 minutes of each session will be reserved for Q & A and discovery of ongoing health network needs and priorities.

Enabling health information exchange within your network

Exchanging health information across organizational boundaries presents a variety of issues around trust, privacy, and security, as well as policy, legal, financial, and technical challenges. This session will look at existing models for health information exchange within a medical trading area, state, or region.

Connecting your network to the NHIN.

The Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN) currently includes 20 federal agencies organized in the Federal Health Architecture (FHA) and 15 HIEs and large health care systems. Private-sector members include HealthBridge, IHIE, MedVirginia, Kaiser, Cleveland Clinic, and others. Federal members include the VA, DOD, CDC, SSA, and NCI. This session will explain the legal and technical requirements to join the NHIN, the services it provides today, and its future direction.

This session will examine the use of a health network to provide two kinds of CME using high quality video. Dr. Jose Conde will discuss multicast endoscopy training and Dr. Robert Bollinger will address HIV training.
