The Arts and Humanities Initiative assists Internet2 members in enabling and advancing collaborations between high performance networking technologies and applications in the arts and humanities.
Under the leadership of Ann Doyle, this initiative focuses on enabling collaborative live performances, master classes, and remote auditions in the performing arts. Outreach is underway to the museum and library community, film departments, and language instruction centers. Partnerships have been formed with vendors to foster development in these arenas, and active working groups are addressing relevant issues in arts and humanities applications over Internet2.
Get Involved!
There are a number of Birds of a Feather (BOF) and Special Interest Groups (SIGs) through which members participate in Internet2 activities. The following groups are sponsored by the Arts & Humanities Initiative.

What's New
The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the Office of Science in the United States Department of Energy (DOE) are working together to provide humanities scholars with access to supercomputers. These grants provide time on DOE supercomputers, as well as the training and support to enable scholars to take full advantage of those resources. Through this NEH and DOE partnership, research projects in the humanities will be able to take advantage of high performance computing resources. Any scholar whose humanities research is computationally intensive may apply. Supported activities may include:
- mining of large textual datasets, morphological analysis, manipulations, and transformations
- analysis of geographical information systems data, maps, etc.
- computationally demanding visualization, modeling, and pattern recognition and analysis
This fall, the New World Symphony in Miami, Florida performed a classical piece written by David Sampson. Prior to the performance, the piece was rehearsed for the composer--who was hosted at New York University--using DVTS and large-format LCD displays to transmit high quality video and audio between NYU and NWS via the Internet2 Network. The composer watched the performance via DV25 digital video, and offered his feedback to the orchestra. Later that day, a live audience watched a discussion between the conductor and the composer, with the composer appearing "live" on a large LCD display via DVTS. Then, the orchestra performed the piece for the live audience. A video featuring highlights from the event is available online.
