Executive Director (VP) for Member Relations & Communications

The position of Executive Director (VP) for Member Relations & Communication will coordinate the overall program and activities for Internet2 Member Relations and Development, Communications and the strategic marketing agenda. This full-time position reports directly to the President and CEO and is an integral and active member of the Internet2 Executive Team. The scope of responsibilities for this position includes, but is not limited to, the coordination and execution of the following functions:

General Oversight

  • Communicate the goals/plans to Internet2's CEO, Board of Trustees, the member community, and other communities of interest
  • Direct the overall development of Member engagement plans and objectives for major constituencies and partner groups
  • Liaison with the Membership Committee of the Board as well as other Board committees and Councils ensuring coordinated and comprehensive member engagement, communication and marketing programs organization-wide
  • Lead the management team of directors and staff responsible for the efforts of the member, communication and marketing program development and implementation
  • Confer with members, partners, customers, and community representatives to evaluate and promote improved and expanded services
  • Determine the budget for all areas in this department
  • Work closely with the CEO and the Executive Team in coordinating all membership activities, communication and marketing initiatives

Member Relations

  • Develop the overall membership plan for Internet2
  • Oversee all operations of the Member Relations area
  • Develop and manage Internet2's member programs, including engagement, recruitment, and sustaining member communities
  • Direct and oversee the management of semi-annual Internet2 Member Meetings
  • Create consensus around the objectives, working with the member/partner constituencies articulating their needs in the member/partner plans

Communications

  • Develop with Communication management the overall communication plan for Internet2
  • Oversee the organization's communication policies and programs
  • Oversee internal/external communication materials and sales /service communications as well as key messages to other member and partner constituencies

Marketing

  • Develop and manage the overall marketing plan for Internet2
  • Plan, develop and establish policies and objectives for marketing in accordance with Internet2's Strategic Plan
  • Initiate market research and member assessment that is consistent with Internet2 objectives
  • Work closely with the Executive Team, in particular the Chief Financial Officer, to coordinate all aspects of marketing with the sales and delivery of services

Qualifications

Required:
  Bachelor's degree in Communication Studies, English, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations or related field is required with a Master's degree preferred.

Minimum 10 years of:

  • Management experience in membership and program development
  • Professional experience in developing university/corporate/governmental relationships in a membership organization
  • Substantial and progressive communication and marketing management and supervisory experience

Experience:

  • Within the higher education environment is required and additional experience within the private sector is preferred
  • To bring together constituent groups for advancing and enhancing a dynamic membership community
  • In examining and re-engineering marketing and communication operations and procedures by formulating policy, by developing and implementing new strategies, and integrating procedures
  • Working with higher education, corporate and governmental organizations
  • Demonstrated professional advancement to senior management and the ability to succeed while assuming increasing responsibilities and leadership of others
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Solid understanding of membership and partner development in higher education and not-for-profit environments
  • Solid understanding of marketing principles and policies in a higher education and not-for-profit environments

Preferred:

  • Recognized standing in the Internet2 community
  • Ph.D. degree and faculty experience
  • Experience in a rich networked and web-based environment including knowledge of portal development, implementation of publication management systems, strategic branding initiatives, service on editorial boards, development of e-communication and on-line programs
     
  • Knowledge of:
    • Internet2 and other member driven initiatives nationally and internationally
    • Communication principles and policies
