Led by its members and focused on their current and future networking needs, Internet2 operates a state-of-the-art national IP and optical infrastructure that together with its regional network partners, reaches close to 70,000 "community anchor institutions," including research universities, colleges and community colleges, K-12 schools, libraries, museums, and science centers, with over 10 million individual users.

Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the President is responsible for all day-to-day operations of the organization as well as development and execution of the various plans, programs, and budgets as adopted by the Board. For 2009, the operating budget exceeded $35 million. The total staff numbers more than 80, which includes some contractors and assigned personnel from our member institutions. Internet2 maintains offices in Ann Arbor, MI and Washington, DC.

Director, International Relations

The Director of International Relations is a senior management position with responsibility for developing, leading and implementing Internet2's international strategies, including leading its international relations related programs and activities. This full-time position will be located in the Internet2 Washington, DC or Ann Arbor, Michigan offices. Significant international and domestic travel is involved with responsibilities that include representation at several international conferences and meetings each year.

The Internet2 international relations program provides a mechanism for ongoing programmatic and technical coordination and joint operations of international advanced networking infrastructures. The International Relations leadership also engages with the broader Internet2 membership and supports international infrastructure projects led by the members themselves. This program also facilitates collaborations between international user communities and a coordinated approach to international advanced networking from the advanced networking community in the U.S.

Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, the coordination and execution of the following functions:

  • Manage relationships with over 50 International partners and their US counterparts, ensuring that the next generation of high-performance Internet2 technologies, infrastructure, and applications are interoperable on a global basis. These activities support the needs of the Internet2 community for global collaboration in research, teaching, and learning, and center around the development and management of the Internet2 international partner program.
  • Engage the global advanced networking community to develop and maintain critical relationships with peer organizations around the globe and connect them with leading Internet2 members and staff resources
  • Work proactively with US-based and international agencies and partners to help provide a leadership role for the US R&E community, and advance the development of coordinated approaches within the US that promote advanced network capabilities reaching both developed and developing regions of the world
  • Consult with the broader Internet2 community including a community of experts and stakeholders to inform Internet2's governance and management as to how international activities in support of Internet2 goals are shaped

Strategic Leadership and Planning

  • Lead the development of Internet2's international strategies to assure Internet2 remains a globally recognized leader in advanced networking
  • Serve as the primary liaison with Internet2's governance and membership in gathering input to the development of strategic planning related to international goals.
  • Serve as the primary liaison and provide ongoing support to the Internet2 Standing Committee on International Strategy
  • Lead Internet2's efforts with other US-based internationally vested agencies and partners to advance and promote the important role that the US research and education community plays in the international networking community. Work in collaboration with these partners to ensure a coordinated and unified position for US leadership in the development of advanced networking and its global connectivity.
  • Direct the execution of strategic plans related to international relations and programs
  • Coordinate the development of policies related to international connectivity for the Internet2 Network and related services
  • Work in collaboration with Internet2's senior management team to develop strategies for collaboration with key international partners

International Community Support

  • Work in collaboration with Internet2 Network Services and domestic and international partners to manage implementation of international connectivity for the Internet2 Network
  • Coordinate with Internet2 partners, member organizations, and others leading international connectivity efforts to support the Internet2 membership's access to international high-performance networking capacity
  • Create opportunities for spreading Internet2 developments
  • Engage international partners in supporting work in technical areas of importance to Internet2
  • Provide information on Internet2 directions, developments, and activities to partner with organizations, governments, and other organizations outside the US
  • Represent Internet2 to its non-US counterparts in international fora, including multilateral organizations such as the OECD, World Bank, etc.

International Relations Program Support

  • Work in collaboration with other Internet2 services (e.g. InCommon Federation, The Internet2 Commons) and programmatic activities (Arts & Humanities, Health, others) to identify and develop strategies for collaboration with key international partners and communities
  • Identify opportunities for expanding Internet2 directions and engaging non-US participants in support of Internet2 activities
  • Provide information to Internet2 staff, governance and membership on directions, developments, and activities of advanced networking initiatives around the world
  • Develop and maintain relationships with US government agencies, multilateral organizations and non-governmental organizations involved in and/or funding international connectivity and collaboration activities
  • Provide information, introductions and advice on international collaborations/projects to Internet2 member communities to facilitate their use of the global R&E network
  • Oversee the Internet2:
  • International Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) partner program and activities
  • Emerging National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) activities
  • Overseas Campuses Initiative program as part of the Internet2 international activities

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in, but not limited to, International Relations, International Business, Government and Public Policy, or technical field. Higher degree is preferred.
  • Experience in international programs and/or international project development
  • Professional experience in developing international partnerships and frameworks
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with emphasis on public speaking and presentation
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, preferably with experience in interacting with many different cultures/nationalities in an international setting
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects
  • Demonstrated project management experience
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, to work well under pressure, to manage priorities and details, and to stay organized in a complex work environment

Additional Desirable Experience:

  • Significant management experience, preferably in the area of higher education international programs
  • Knowledge of Internet technologies in the U.S. and international research and higher education sectors
  • Knowledge of Internet2 and other international activities within the Internet2 membership
  • Foreign language skills, in particular, but not limited to, Chinese, Spanish and/or French
  • Experience living and/or traveling abroad

Director, Network Services and Business Operations

Internet2 provides the U.S. research and education community with a dynamic, innovative world-leading hybrid optical and packet network. Through collaboration with regional optical networks, international and campus partners, Internet2 provides next-generation network services and a platform for the development of new networking paradigms. With community control of the fundamental networking infrastructure, the Internet2 Network provides the scalability for its members to efficiently provision resources to address bandwidth-intensive requirements of their campuses such as collaborative applications, distributed research experiments, grid-based data analysis, and social networking.

This full time opportunity will work with Internet2 and its membership, in addition to other organizations in the advanced networking fields, to manage and administer Internet2 Network programs and services. This is a leadership position with supervisory responsibility and both an internal and external focus. It will be responsible for working with the Internet2 connectors, state and regional network staff, Internet2 governance and staff to administer the service and business aspects of Internet2’s network portfolio. The position requires effective communications with Internet2 network members and the ability to analyze and support services, contract, budget, and financial activities of the Internet2 network. This individual, with their staff, will have responsibility to develop business models for overall network services as well as to develop and promulgate information about the network service portfolio.

The primary focus of this position will be to work with the Internet2 community and staff to support the operational aspects of the Internet2 network. It is full-time, preferably based in the Internet2 Ann Arbor, Michigan headquarters, and requires approximately 25% travel each month. A successful candidate will understand the global research and education community, be skilled, energetic, communicative, experienced, accountable, and able to multi-task.

Responsibilities include:

  • Communicating with current and potential network connectors, partners and community members to analyze their needs, determine requirements and help develop potential solutions
  • Leading members of the higher education and research communities and staff in defining, managing, funding and operating the Internet2 network
  • Identifying opportunities to assist Internet2 members with additional network services in a manner that is conducive to a research and education environment
  • Manage the Internet2 network relationships with its connectors and peers including the Internet2 Network, Fiberco, Manhattan Landing (MAN LAN) and other related projects.
  • Interactively communicate with members in a professional and detailed manner, emphasizing flexibility, budget analysis, capacity, and future capabilities
  • Assist in the financial analysis of expenses and fees related to Internet2 network services
  • Manage portions of projects related to deployment of services to implement agreements, including oversight of testing and vendor coordination

Qualifications

Required

  • Understanding of Internet2 and its research and education communities
  • Five years’ minimum experience in research network services, regional networking, and business operations
  • Minimum Bachelors degree in computer science or an engineering discipline, or a computationally oriented science
  • Demonstrated ability to creatively solve problems and work in a fluid environment
  • Experience developing project plans, using project management software, and meeting project deadlines
  • Conducting site investigations, making presentations, and interfacing with members
  • Proven record of responding promptly to member needs, soliciting feedback and meeting commitments
  • Ability to communicate with both technical and non-technical audiences and to convey concepts clearly
  • Software computer skills must include: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email, and calendar/scheduling, databases, and project management tools

Network Software Engineer

Internet2 is an advanced networking consortium led by the research and education community. The Architecture and Performance group within the Internet2 Research and Development (R&D) department is responsible for the development of novel network technologies in support of the Internet2 Network, as well as its research and education member community.

This position will be principally responsible for developing software to support Internet2’s ION service, which provides dynamic circuit network capabilities. The position will also focus on software development for the perfSONAR performance monitoring framework to support users of both the Internet2 ION service and the Internet2 IP network. Over time, this position will become increasingly involved in the development and design of software to support a more integrated multi-layer hybrid packet/circuit-switched network paradigm.

This full-time position reports in the Architecture and Performance Group. Preference will be given to applicants willing to be based in Ann Arbor, Michigan or Washington, DC. Remote positions will be considered for applicants with the appropriate experience and skills. There is regular short-term travel approximately four to six times per year. There will be no re-location expenses included for this position. Representative duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Design and develop open-source network measurement, monitoring, analysis and visualization tools. Initial projects will be in direct support of the growing perfSONAR development project found at http://psps.perfsonar.net
  • Design and develop open-source software to support hybrid packet/ circuit-switched networks. Initial projects will be in direct support of the Internet2 ION service http://ion.net.internet2.edu/
  • Design and develop user-centric visualization and analysis of multi-domain use of dynamic circuit networks including performance metrics
  • Coordinate and collaborate these projects with an extended development team, including Internet2 staff, university researchers, and international partners
  • Maintain system software in support of software development work as well as network measurement and analysis tasks
  • Maintain good release management practices for all developed tools
  • Create documents supporting software, systems, and processes
  • Present at Internet2 meetings and participate in development related working group meetings
  • Support all developed tools for the wider Internet2 community

Qualifications

Required:

  • BS degree or equivalent work experience in Computer Science, Engineering or related field and a minimum of three years related experience
  • Demonstrated experience programming in a number of languages, including C, python, Java, Perl, in a Unix environment
  • Demonstrated experience with Web technologies and visualization technologies such as AJAX, JSON, XML, CSS, XHTML
  • Demonstrated proficiency at user interface design
  • Demonstrated experience with system administration of Unix systems

Desirable:

  • Working knowledge of academic institution policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with the Internet2 community and the Higher Education environment

Intern, System Administrator - Technical Services Group

A Junior System Administrator is needed to support and maintain all hardware/software for use by staff and membership of Internet2. A major emphasis of this role will be the support, deployment, and operation of Macintosh OS and Microsoft Windows based applications and Network services. This is a student worker position with an appointment of 10-40 hours per week, and is located in the Ann Arbor, Michigan office. Internet2 will work around student schedules.

PRIMARY DUTIES

  • Install, configure, and support Mac OS X, Windows XP, and Windows Vista desktop/laptop computers and peripherals in the Internet2 network environment
  • Troubleshoot end-user hardware, software, and networking problems
  • Perform end user support of internal services including email, calendaring, printing, backup, and web applications
  • Perform and assist in other assigned tasks

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience providing end user support for desktop/laptop hardware/software
  • Experience as a Macintosh and Windows system administrator
  • Experience with Linux
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a significant departmental team
  • Ability to triage and prioritize multiple concurrent tasks
  • Familiarity with local and wide area networking concepts
