Sales / Systems Engineer
Internet2 provides the U.S. research and education community with a dynamic, innovative and cost-effective hybrid optical and packet network. The network was designed to provide next-generation production services as well as a platform for the development of new networking ideas and protocols. With community control of the fundamental networking infrastructure, the Internet2 Network provides the necessary scalability for member institutions to efficiently provision resources to address bandwidth-intensive requirements of their campuses such as, collaborative applications, distributed research experiments, grid-based data analysis and social networking
The position of Sales / Systems Engineer will work with Internet2 and its membership, as well as other organizations in the higher education community and advanced networking fields, to analyze clients’ network systems and requirements, develop and present solutions to address their networking needs, and provide project management oversight of the service implementation.
Representative Duties include:
This position is full-time, reports to the Deputy Chief Operating Officer, is based in the Internet2 Ann Arbor, Michigan office, and requires approximately 25% travel in a month. A successful candidate will be skilled, energetic, hands-on, resourceful, accountable and able to multi-task.
The primary focus of this position will be to work with the account manager in identifying prospective clients and designing network systems for advanced applications. Responsibilities include:
- Working with product managers and members of the higher education and research communities in identifying potential collaborators/clients for network services sales
- Meeting with clients, analyzing their needs, and determining site and equipment requirements
- Identifying opportunities to assist clients with additional services in a manner that is conducive to a research and education environment
- Making presentations to clients in professional, detailed manner, emphasizing salable features such as flexibility, cost, capacity, and economy of operation
- Assisting account managers in preparing quotes as well as writing contracts for orders.
- Enter data into Internet2 database to store, retrieve, and manipulate data for analysis of system capabilities and requirements
- Project managing the deployment of services after the sale is complete, including oversight of end-to-end circuit testing, until hand-off to the client
- Covers national territory, up to 25% domestic travel required for this position
Secondary Duties:
- Train users on new or modified equipment/systems
- Prepare reports of business transactions and keep accurate, detailed expense accounts
- Enter client information and other sales data in client database
- Develop and maintain relationship with purchasing contacts
- Provide feedback from the field related to customer needs or trends to development teams.
- Attend industry and community specific trade shows
Qualifications:
Required
- Five years’ minimum experience on network design, network systems, and network engineering.
- Experience trouble-shooting networking systems especially with the NOC and at client sites.
- Familiarity with optical networking equipment from manufacturers such as Ciena and Infinera.
- Demonstrated ability to creatively solve problems and work in a fluid environment.
- Experience developing project plans, using project management software, and meeting project deadlines.
- Conducting site investigations, making client presentations, and interfacing with clients.
- Proven record of responding promptly to client needs, soliciting feedback and meeting commitments.
- Ability to communicate with both technical and non-technical audiences and convey concepts clearly.
- Software computer skills must include: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email, and calendar/scheduling.
- Ability to balance individual and team responsibilities with openness to others’ views.
Desired
- Understanding of the U.S. research university community and supporting information technology organizations.
Required Education:
- Minimum Bachelors degree in computer science or engineering, electrical engineering, a computationally oriented science or engineering discipline

Jr. System Administrator
Internet2's Technical Services area requires a system administrator whose major emphasis will be the evaluation, deployment, operation, documentation, and security of Unix/Linux servers and applications at a junior level.
This full-time position reports directly to a Sr. System Administrator and is located in the Ann Arbor, Michigan office. Some travel is required, approximately four times per year.
PRIMARY DUTIES:- Production operation and security of Unix/Linux services and applications
- Deployment, operation, and support of server hardware and software
- System documentation and inventory
- Work under the supervision of a senior system administrator as well as work independently and as a member of a significant technical team
- Travel approximately 2-4 times per year with maximum of 1 week duration
- Production operation and security of Windows services and applications
- Production operation and security of network infrastructure (switches & routers)
- Participate in the development, deployment, and administration of web-based database services to support staff, members, and projects.
- Advanced user-level skills with Linux or Unix.
- Experience programming in a high-level language, such as perl, shell, python, java, C.
- Experience working as a member of a team
- Demonstrated ability to document work assignments
- Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with others and as a member of a team
- Demonstrated written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, including documenting the work
- Ability to organize projects, balance priorities, and work accurately under deadlines
- Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. of equipment
- Associate's degree in a technology-oriented field, or an equivalent combination of college education and experience
- Bachelor's degree in a technology-oriented field
