ASC Meeting Notes
February 22, 2006
1:00PM – 2:00PM EST

Participants: Cheryl Munn-Fremon, Mike McGill, Russ Hobby, Jacqueline Brown, Bill Decker,  Alan Blatecky, David Lassner, Alan Whitney, Cliff Lynch, Parvati Dev

Merger Update
David Lassner provided an update on the merger proceedings.  The process is moving along and gaining momentum.  The NLR Board passed a resolution and forwarded some specific language with regards to the by-laws to be reviewed by the Internet2 Board.  The NPPAC met about a week ago and supported the documents.  The contents are not very different from pervious documents but it does incorporate language on research and development.  Ultimately the Internet2 Board will have to determine if the merger is a good idea and will look closely at the due diligence results.

AWARDS Program Update
We received 12 nominations.  We have a good mix of science and teaching & learning.

CETF Update
Bill Decker distributed a status report and a draft report.  The CETF is still working on this.  The task force will be meeting on March 16 in Chicago and would like to draw to a conclusion by Spring Member Meeting.  The task force has tried to work at a level that is enduring and we believe the result created will be enduring.  We hope that the membership and leadership will still find the work of this task force valuable.  The results may not be exactly as set forth in the original charge.  We focused very hard on the question, “What does it mean to be an Internet2 campus today?”   The task force still has work to do and feedback from this council is welcome.

Comments:
David Lassner indicated that he is satisfied with the direction the CETF went with the charge.  The thought framework pursued adds value to the results.

Bill Decker advised that the research community has been discussed by the task force and that a commitment to the researches remains.  This is something that is difficult to capture in a few brief sentences and so this part of the document is lengthier with the explanation.  The task force supports an infrastructure that is flexible enough to meet the community’s needs.

One of the commitments that the task force outlines is to innovation.  The support for innovation is a commitment to enabling cyberinfrastructure.  Not just wires and routers and fibers but people, support, activities and facilitation.  It is not enough to simply provide enabling infrastructure we must be committed to its use, adoption and so on.

We want to be able to say what it means to come to the table as a member of this community.  We hope to provide that in this report, to have a basis for best practices.
Next meeting March 22.
