  • Review of Agenda
  • Merger Update - by David. Some discussions focus less on the merger and more on working together to execute projects which might build capacity for how merge would work within the two org structures and cultures.  Various documents in various stages of disclosure.  Most really want to see this merger happen. Most folks outside of the inner core don't understand why this is so difficult.  The issues cover the gamut from cultural differences, different member models, financial discovery, sense of how long do you perpetuate Internet2 or NLR once you decide to merge.  NLR has long-term contracts with members and vendors.  Very complex items on the list.  David is personally watching to make sure people don't forget the needs of the users and the researchers.  In scholarly community, needs of researchers aren't the same as needs of network researchers.  Two distinct councils or committees have been suggested.
  • Updates from ASC Members
  • A discussion of the researchers needs based on the experience of the council members ensued.  There is an impression that the network problem is solved. People have the impression they don't have to do anything and the nation doesn't have to do anything either.  Need to find the right language and the right context to get the message across.  Why is GENI being proposed?  What does this have to do with you as member of Internet2, NLR or scientific community?  Need to carry that message.  If GENI is about building the internet from scratch, then that means it’s about transforming everything.  Fresh thinking without constraints may get us farther.  We as a community can insist that we have continuity and that if there are fundamental differences, that's its not disruptive (torn apart) when we try to do this.
  • Australians have committed to lay 10 gig backbones to all antennas in next couple of years.  Ambitious program that is well funded.  Europeans have big funding.  Japanese OC48 to telescopes oceanic connections.  United States is doing nothing.  TO DO: Alan to send around recent presentation at meeting in India.

  • Update/Discussion of Ongoing ASC Agenda for Action
  • Real Time Communication  RTC group - actively writing cookbook collaboratively.  Session at SMM06. Outreach to other working groups in this area.
  • Teaching & Learning  - active group, work continues
  • Campus Expectations Task Force  - planning to deliver final report at SMM06 as charged.  Still some work to do among the sub committees to flesh out the specifics of the commitments.  Biggest area of current discussion is how to pull together best practices. Looking to have CETF face to face in early March to keep momentum going.
  • Updates from Internet2 Staff -Cheryl -- Several recommendations were received for the IDEA awards.  Committee has reviewed and is in the process of voting.

The group exchanged information about the successful demonstrations at SC05, outreach to India, and an African workshop.  A collaboration between NLR and the Hawaii School of Medicine and others to look at the use of wireless.

Possible ASC meeting at SMM.
Monday 8 AM -1 PM

Russ mentioned the wireless workshop - to bring together sensor network folks together if there is wireless work that can be done.

Harvey - GENI report - other major theme was sensors and wireless networks.

Call ended.  David summarized that this was a rich meeting with many good ideas. Hope to make something happen.
