Review of Agenda -
The work of the two Groups A & B, chartered by NLR and Internet2 to look
at future networking and organizational needs is building to a cresendo. Group
B report is out and David is interested in talking about what we think the
non-building the network part the new enterprise should look like. His personal
observation is the people dedicated to the restructuring committee are not
interested in applications and users.
Getting started: Group B recommends the merger of NLR and Internet2. Proposed
Board will consist of 40 people, five committees of the board were outlined,
as were four councils like the current council model. Applications Strategy
Council and Science Research Council as balance to the Network Research Council
- the big science folks. ASC is small science, teaching and learning
(or big science not related to grids). What do we think?
A long discussion occurred about the reasons for the Group B recommendation
and next steps. There are still many decisions to be made, but agreement
from both boards to proceed with the merger is needed, then additional details
will come out.
The ASC should provide a vision for the communities they represent to say
what they would like from a combined organization. What would we like
the ASC to be, what does this community want to have? What do the communities
you represent need from a converged organization? David said it's unclear
how much of an applications effort there will be. Back to the basics of building
the network seems to be the focus. He is concerned that most people on
most campuses haven't used what has been provided already. He is concerned
about the amount of attention paid to a small portion of constituency. Alan
Whitney agrees totally. There is a big barrier for a lot of people who
don't have technical expertise to use the internet. Without support,
there is still a barrier for many to make good use of Internet2. Ecosystem
view is that responsibility can take place at different levels.
The ASC is in a position to provide input now at the beginning of the decision
to move forward with the merger or not. We need to think about the users
and what they need and the implications for the types of membership, financial
structures and services that a combined organization might provide. Many
of the activities that have sprung from the ASC are critical to the community: CETF
and RTC are two examples. A vision of Teaching and Learning needs to
be included in the vision for a new organization.
The Internet2 board meets to talk about this June 30 and to pass a resolution
to go ahead with the merger planning. David would like to
share something from the ASC prior to that meeting about concerns for applications/users.
To Do: A resolution supporting going ahead with merger planning and
describing the ASC concerns will be drafted and forwarded to the Internet2
board prior to June 30.
