ASC Monthly Call
November 24, 2004
1:00 - 2:00 pm Eastern
Participants: David Lassner, Cliff Lynch, Egon Verharen, George
Thoma, Cheryl Munn-Fremon, Terri Saarinen -scribe
Agenda
1. RTC - Finalizing list of members for advisory council.
To Do: David to continue to work with Laurie and Cheryl
to finalize list and identify chair for the group.
2.Update on areas with other activity:
Outreach to Research Officersand CIOs:
Educause is independently gearing up an initiative to engage CIOs
in support of research. A couple of CIOs on CIO listserv started
discussions and may spin off constituent group. ECAR is planning
a research paper. This would be a great activity for Educause and
Internet2 to work together to create a unified space for the community.
Bill Decker will continue to lead ASC interestes. CSG (Common
Solutions Group) also did a whole day workshop at University of
Virginia on the rebirth of research computing. There are powerpoint
slides on the CSG site.
Brainstorming discussion between participants about the Lecture Object initiative
and how it gets framed. Group decided to limit our work to a "chunk of
video with a set of synchronized powerpoint slides or text or an extended multi-media
document, but not a full course". There is a desire to keep this simple.
There is a need for something straight forward where captured video can be
attached to a file, stored and accessed.
It was suggested that some schools have begun to create lecture objects. Other
groups are working in this area. It was suggested that we do a fast poll
of the tools people are actually using. Also would like to create a procedure,
hints and tips document.
A BoF at the Spring Member Meeting was suggested as a way to start organizing
a group in this area. Next steps would be to develop polling instrument,
use Internet2 technologies to distribute by email or put survey on web (one
page, 10 min), then aggregate the data.
Problem statement: Create a video presentation synchronized with PowerPoint
or html with meta data such as who gave the lecture, content etc.
To Do: Submit a BoF for Spring Member Meeting. David
to describe items that should be queried in the polling instrument.
Call ended at 1:45 pm
