Corporate Members Leverage Shibboleth

Internet2 corporate member EBSCO Information Services has incorporated Shibboleth technology into commercially-available products and services to provide attribute-based, privacy-preserving access to controlled resources. In addition, corporate member ProQuest Company laid the groundwork for delivering Shibboleth functionality to the company’s clients.

From a business perspective, it's been extremely valuable to work with the Internet2 community and our university partners on Shibboleth to help further research on practical problems such as authentication and authorization.
Michael Gorrell
Chief Information Officer
EBSCO Information Services
I believe that research in the delivery of complex information over high-bandwidth networks is as important to the academic community as it is to information providers serving the academic community, such as ProQuest. In this, I see Internet2 as a key resource to bring the two groups together to discover and develop the synergies required to deliver archival and academic information.Rodger Miller
Director of Advanced Information Technologies
ProQuest Information and Learning

EBSCO Information Services, one of the largest publishers of online information, incorporated Shibboleth into its research service, EBSCOhost, which provides online access to more than 120 databases, 11,000 electronic journals, and 5.1 million articles. EBSCO has worked with the Internet2 community to develop and test Shibboleth since the very early stages of the project. Working with Internet2 member Ohio State University, EBSCO was the first online resource provider site to implement Shibboleth. In 2004, EBSCO announced full Shibboleth support as one of the array of authentication mechanisms supported for accessing EBSCOhost.

Internet2 corporate member ProQuest Company, a leading publisher of information solutions for the education, automotive, and power equipment markets, prototyped and completed a functional implementation of the Shibboleth resource provider component, with assistance from the University of California, San Diego, an Internet2 university. This work set the stage for implementing Shibboleth across their online information services.
