Since its inception, a primary goal of Internet2 has been to support the development, deployment, and use of advanced network applications that allow people to work together in ways not possible on the commercial Internet. The Internet2 community has extended a high-performance networking infrastructure to researchers, teachers, and students in fields as diverse as the performing arts, high-energy physics, earthquake engineering, and the health sciences. As a result, leaders in these fields have been able to use network technologies that improve their effectiveness and productivity. Increasingly these technologies are becoming integral to their work. At the same time, Internet2 Working Groups and initiatives have been exploring and testing new technologies such as Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and Digital Video Transport System (DVTS), as well as promoting the expansion and interoperability of existing technologies such as H.323 videoconferencing.
